SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES LEAGUE SUCCESS

The Saundersfoot ladies team became Pembrokeshire bowls champions last week for the third consecutive time, and they did it the hard way with three wins in five days.

A hectic end of season league programme, forced upon them by having to rearrange games due to the weather, led to the fixture congestion, but the village girls came through it in style, gaining the maximum six points in each of the matches to finish with 104 points and pip Pembroke Dock ladies, who ended on 98 points, and Whitland, who came third on 93 points.

Knowing that they had these teams breathing down their neck meant that there was little room for error, but Neyland were defeated by 18 shots, Pendine by 30 and Tasker, of Haverfordwest, by 13.

The squad who played consisted of captain Angela Roberts, Christine Harris, Steph Amos, Marion Evans, Susan McKehon, Anne Evans, Joyce Howe, Lorna Bissell, Viv Edwards, Gemma Amos and Alwen Hughes, and the team will be presented with the league trophy at a presentation night at the Saundersfoot club in November.

TENBY 118 SAUNDERSFOOT 52

The Saundersfoot men's team travelled to play near neighbours Tenby last Saturday for their last fixture of the Pembrokeshire league Division One programme.

As Tenby had already been crowned champions and with the villagers secure in fifth place, there wasn't the usual atmosphere on and around the green and both fielded understrength teams.

Although only having lost to Tenby by just three shots in the reverse fixture, home advantage and experience certainly came to the fore on this occasion and the Sutton Street boys, led by captain Jon Webb, ran out worthy winners.

The match was played in an excellent spirit and captain Neil Hensman congratulated the Tenby team after the game, not only for the day's win, but on another league success.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Tenby skips only) were:

Mike Oliver, Tony Wheeler, Graham Roberts, Brian McKehon 9; Craig Guymer 22.

Roy Kennion, Malcolm Young, Alan Brace, Steve Dick 16; John Roberts 20.

Bill Glynn, Mike Ashbridge, Neil Hensman, Paul Blayney 12; Jon Webb 35.

George Cavell, Mike Carr, Roy Pring, John Dugmore 15; Andrew Muskett 41.

SAUNDERFOOT 94 HENLEAZE TOURISTS 93

Saundersfoot completed their home fixtures last week with a mixed friendly against a touring team from Henleaze Bowling Club.

Both teams were evenly matched and with four of the five rinks back in the clubhouse, the visitors led by two shots.

The remaining quartet of Susan McKehon, Brenda Davies, Graham Roberts and skip Mike Carr had one end remaining and had experienced a torrid afternoon up to that point, winning only seven ends but, to the delight of the onlookers, picked-up a three to win the overall match for the villagers.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Henleaze skips only) were:

George Cavell, Christine Harris, Audrey Williams, Don Poole 25; Bob Locke 19.

Dennis Reed, Tony Wheeler, Alwen Hughes, Lorna Bissell 16; Keith Pike 19.

Mike Oliver, John Austin, Steph Amos, Beryl Lawrence 18; Andy Locke 17.

Susan McKehon, Brenda Davies, Graham Roberts, Mike Carr 13; Grace Douglas 28.

Lyn Statters, John Haig, Sue Roden, Myrddin Dennis 22; Den Gazzard 10.

PRESENTATION EVENING

The club's presentation evening, at which the tournament winners will receive their trophies, takes place this evening at the clubhouse, commencing at 7.30 pm.

WORKING PARTY

There was a working party at the green last Monday, putting the benches, rink markers etc. away for the winter, and club chairman Paul Blayney would like to thank those men who attended to perform the tasks.

There will be another one next Monday, to tidy up the surrounds, and hopefully a good number will attend to prove the adage that many hands make light work.

DINNER AND DANCE

Members are reminded that the list for attending the club's dinner and dance at the Merlewood Hotel on October 12 will be taken down at the end of the month, but there is still time to put your name down to attend the last celebration of Saundersfoot Bowling Club's 50th anniversary.

MEN'S COUNTY TOURNAMENTS

The competition entry sheets for the 2013 county tournaments are on the notice board and if you want to enter, you only have a few weeks in which to do so, as they have to be returned by October 15.
