Good Luck
Headlining our report this week is a good luck message to three members of Saundersfoot Bowling Club, Kath Blayney, Ceris Hewlings and Ann Lewis.
They will be be playing in the British Isles Championships in Bangor, Northern Ireland representing Wales in the triples competition, after they won the Welsh Women's Bowling Association triples competition last year.
The trio face Jersey in the semi-final on Sunday morning.
Following the championships, Ceris will play in the Welsh team in the Home International Series from Tuesday-Thursday at the same venue.
Everyone at the club wishes Kath, Ceris and Ann every success.
Saundersfoot 76 Page Park 93
Saundersfoot played a mixed friendly last Saturday against tourists from Page Park Bowling Club from Bristol.
Unfortunately, their intended match at Tenby the previous day had been cancelled due to the inclement weather and so the visitors were keen to get on the green and show their prowess and indeed they did by running out victors by seventeen shots.
On a contrasting day with bright sunshine, the only winning home rink was skipped by club fixture secretary Stew Howe who was aided and abetted by John Bingham, Christine Harris and John Austin.
Captain for the day was Neil Hensman who led a minute's silence prior to the commencement of the match in memory of club member John Moffat who had passed away the day previous after a long illness.
Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Page Park skips only were:
J. Bingham, C. Harris, J. Austin, S. Howe 21 J.Walters 11.
D. Roberts, G. Roberts, N. Ruff, V. Edwards 16 B. Green 25.
E. Smith, J. Howe, N. Hensman, B. Deeley 12 R. Hendy 20.
A. Roberts, A. Wheeler, J. Haig, B. Desmond 14 J. Durrant 20.
P. Lewis, A. Evans, M. Carr, B. Lewis 13 A. Weech 17.
SAUNDERSFOOT 164 COWBRIDGE 68
Saundersfoot played their second mixed friendly of the weekend on Sunday when Cowbridge were the visitors and to say they had a better result is an understatement as they won the match by an impressive 96 shots.
The original date for this friendly was in April, but the match had to be postponed due to heavy rain, but so keen were the Vale of Glamorgan team to fulfil the fixture, having visited the previous year, that a new date was hastily arranged.
Every home rink was victorious, but I cannot report every detail due to some of the cards disappearing after the game, probably by the Cowbridge team trying to destroy the evidence!
Seriously, the visitors took the defeat well, and there was an excellent atmosphere all afternoon on the green and afterwards in the clubhouse.
What little information I have on the rink scores is: Roy Pring's rink 41 Cowbridge 8; Gloria Dugmore 17 Cowbridge 14; John Dugmore 23 Cowbridge 17; Brian Deeley 40 Cowbridge 6; Stew Howe 24 Cowbridge 11; Barrie Lee 19 Cowbridge 12.
SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 45
FISHGUARD LADIES 18
The ladies of Saundersfoot continued the defence of their league title last week with a resounding home win over Fishguard.
Top rink went to captain Angela Roberts, Steph Amos, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans who defeated Jenny Harries by 26 shots to six.
The other rink of Sue McKehon, Christine Harris, Anne Evans and Lorna Bissell were also successful, defeating Gwen McFarlane by 19 shots to 12.
JOHN MOFFAT
Members were saddened last week to hear of the passing of popular club member John Moffat.
John had been ill for nearly two years, but the news of his death still shocked everyone.
A dedicated member both on and off the green, he always supported team games and competitions and was always on hand to help with odd jobs and carpentry that needed to be done in the clubhouse and on the surrounds.
The sympathy of the committee and all members is sent to his widow Margaret and family at this sad time.
The funeral takes place next Tuesday at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, at 2.30 pm, with a reception following the service at the bowling club.
