Tenby Swifts Under 15s reached their fifth Pembrokeshire Cup final in a row and played Crymych at Haverfordwest last Sunday.

It was the boys’ last game in Pembrokeshire as juniors and they were keen to put in a strong performance.

The game started well for Tenby and, after keeping the ball from kick-off for a few phases, Alex Wainwright made a clean break to score out wide - he added the conversion.

Soon after, slick handling led to speedy winger Louis Rees being freed out wide and he showed the cover defence a clean pair of heels for the second score.

It looked as though Tenby were going to take control of the game, but to Crymych’s credit, they battled hard and were the next to score a converted try.

The breakdown contest was being won by Crymych and a succession of penalties awarded by referee Charlie Watts led to a long range kick from Osian Hill, to make the half-time score, Tenby 12 Crymych 10.

Both sides ran for the shade afforded by the lowering sun for the half-time team talk.

Crymych’s tails were up and Tenby were looking tired. The second half started with Crymych in control and further penalties led to Hill landing another kick.

Half of the crowd were delirious as the lead changed hands and a further penalty made the score 16-12 in Crymych’s favour.

Character had to be shown and after a strong forward surge, captain Lewis Morgan crossed the line, not initially awarded by Watts, but given after intervention from the assistant referee.

Tenby were back on the front foot and they soon made room for winger Rees to round the cover defence and, despite a tap tackle, score his second try. Wainwright’s conversion was successful off the upright and Tenby were eight points clear.

Substitutions were made as the game moved towards full-time.

A loud cheer greeted the award of a penalty in Tenby’s favour - Wainwright’s kick from distance put the game out of Crymych’s reach.

Final score Tenby 27 Crymych 16.

A fitting end to this group of boys’ junior rugby careers - five cup finals in a row and winning four of them.

The next phase saw a scrum for Beddau, but it wasn’t long before Tenby were able to gain possession again with some good catches and runs from Iori, Jack and Bennett the play was good but Beddau were able to steel the ball with some great tackles from Evan, Ollie and Ely before the ball went dead and the game came to a close 3-1 to Tenby.

Tenby U10s

On Sunday, Tenby Under 10s travelled to Haverfordwest to take part in their first Pembrokeshire Finals Day. They were to play Crymych.

From the first whistle, both teams played a very physical game. The forwards were drawn into a fierce battle on the ground, fighting for possession of the ball.

Tenby, when given the chance, tried to run the ball and create some space, but the Crymych defensive line held strong and proved difficult for the Seasiders to break.

It would be Crymych who would take their chances first and went into half-time 10-0 in the lead.

Tenby walked into the second half with their heads held high, the chant of ‘ready, ready, ready’ could be heard loud and clear by all supporters and the Seasiders definitely were ready.

Crymych continued to apply strong periods of pressure, but Tenby, as a team, stood strong and some huge tackles meant their defensive line became impassable.

With the minutes ticking down, Tenby never gave up and continued to try and create chances for their backline.

With the final whistle nearing, the Seasiders were finally rewarded for all their efforts with a well-deserved try for Connor in the corner.

The game ended 10-5 to Crymych, but Tenby’s performance was one to be proud of in their first ever final appearance. Thank you to all who came to support and a big well done to all players and coaches.
