PEMBROKE Rugby Club’s First XV entertained Narberth Athletic in the WRU National Division 4 Cup competition, on an extremely windy, wet day, on a wet but very good surface.
The visitors had been bolstered by the addition of a couple of senior players, after their senior side’s Cup fixture had been cancelled. Pembroke were at near full strength and very keen to keep their winning run going. However, the home side were put to the sword in the first quarter, which saw the visitors’ forwards and backs combine really well to set up multiple opportunities that they took to score four excellent tries. In the second quarter the home side rallied a little, but failed to capitalise on the few chances they created, leaving the score at the break a commanding 0-27 to the visitors.
Although the home side were certainly more focused in the third quarter as they played with a strong wind advantage, the visitors remained very dangerous and scored a further three well-constructed tries to take a commanding lead. Stung by their opponents tenacity, the home side finally began to take more control of possession and territory through some excellent phase play, which provided them opportunities to score three, unconverted tries to none in the last quarter. But sadly, all too late to influence the final result, which was an emphatic Cup win for the Otters and a lesson learned by the young Pembroke squad. All at Pembroke wish Narberth good luck in the next round.
