Whitland 17 pts Waunarlwydd 16

As so often this season, Whitland were involved in another close encounter on Saturday, only this time they were mightily relieved that at last the result went their way for a change.

Indeed, it was real nail-biting stuff and could hardly have been closer, with only a single point separating them and visitors Waunarlwydd when the referee’s final whistle sounded.

Although the well-deserved victory was not enough to see the Borderers climb off the bottom of division one west, it will certainly have given them a lift as they bid to claw their way up the table in the second half of the season.

In fact, they are now level on points with Loughor, the team above them, and with a couple of games in hand, hopes are high that they won’t be propping up the rest for much longer.

Their hero at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn on Saturday was Nico Setaro, who fresh from helping Fishguard to victory against Tenby a fortnight ago, was at it again, with a personal haul of 12 points as he bagged a couple of tries and a conversion.

The other points came from a third try by James Stephenson, while the visitors replied with a try by Phil Evans, converted by Lee Evans, who also landed three penalty goals.
