Pembroke Dock Quins U14s travelled to Llangennech RFC on Sunday and faced a tough battle against a well-drilled side. The Quins were forced to travel with a bare 15 players as they had key players out with injury. Many of the boys had to play out of position and a big thanks to Jordan Palmer for slotting in on the wing for the first time ever and Nathan Morris for his continued hard work and commitment.
The game started well for the Quins, with the forwards working well under the direction of number nine Oli Lewis. Hywel Baker slotted into the number 10 position and was able to use his pace and power to break through with a neat offload to the ever-present Andrew Skone who scooted over under the posts - Geraint Powell slotted the conversion to make it 7-0.
From the restart, the Quins' forwards drove hard, with Mathew Washbourne leading the way, and when quick ball was spun out, Geraint Powell rounded off a well-worked try. The conversion was also again slotted by Powell to make it 14-0 to the Quins.
With the Quins still celebrating and not fully switched on, Llangennech switched the restart and gathered the ball out wide, kicked ahead and managed to scrape over to score in the corner. They converted the try to cut the lead to 14-7.
The Quins attacked again and, after many hard fought rucks and drives, the ball was finally moved wide, with Blake Hughes free to use his speed and skill to cross over. This time the conversion went wide.
Llangennech attacked with determined vigour and pushed hard into the Quins' half, where, taking advantage of some poor tackling, they managed to cross the line to make the score 19-12 at half-time
With the team talk over, the Quins restarted long, putting good pressure on Llangennech. This forced them into shipping the ball wide, where Hywel Baker neatly intercepted the ball and broke through to score under the posts, with Powell converting to make it 24-12.
Llangennech lifted their game and attacked the Quins hard, producing some determined rucking and running, and again some poor defence saw their winger scoot over to score a converted try which narrowed the gap to just 24-19.
The Quins were under pressure now and had various warnings and gave away penalties for infringements (some doubtful). This allowed Llangennech to work the ball out and slide over to score again. The Quins were now behind 26-24!
With the pressure on and the game time closing out, the Quins forwards of Arron Boswell, Tom Watson, Tom Barras, Leighton Hart and Joe Gray lifted the tempo and fronted up. Tom Clarkson and Big Scotty worked hard in the loose, carrying the ball, before Hywel Baker took a short pass off the scrum just outside his 22 and burst through the midfield with a 60-plus yard dash. With three defenders closing him down, he received great support from speedster Geraint Powell and a quick offload five yards out saw Powell score under the posts.
With the conversion slotted, the final whistle sounded with the Quins victorious by 31 points to 26.
It was a great win boys, and a tough battle by all.
