This year's Open Week tournament at Pembroke Dock Bowling Club, once again well organised by Mr. Gerard Thomas, was a challenge because of the adverse weather conditions experienced through out the week.
All bowlers adjusted to the weather conditions to make an excellent week of bowling. The groundsmen must be congratulated in maintaining the green in tip top condition and were praised by visiting bowlers and club members alike for the sterling work put in to make the week such a success. The ladies of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club once again excelled in the catering which is second to none within the bowling fraternity.
This was the 67th consecutive Open Week held by the club, with the first commencing in June 1945. The two main cups are the Alfred Phillips Bowl and the Sudbury Bowl. This year, saw the introduction of a mixed pairs trophy played for by club members only, donated by Mr. Leslie Davies and Mrs. Diana Davies, called the Les and Diana Mixed Pairs Trophy.
Finals day was blessed with beautiful sunshine leading to exceptional bowling from all finalists. Ashley Hooper from Tenby Bowling Club played exceptionally well all week reaching the two main finals which is a wonderful achievement.
In the final of the Sudbury Bowl, Ashley Hooper beat Trevor Harries, of Haverfordwest Bowling Club, in a very closely contested match 21-19.
In the final of the Alfred Phillips Bowl, Nigel Davies, of Whitland Bowling Club, beat Ashley Hooper in a nailbiting game, going into the last end 20-all with Nigel getting the one shot he needed to win the game 21-20.
The final of the Les and Diana Mixed Pairs Trophy also went to the last end, with Gerard Thomas and Kay Cole, of Pembroke Dock BC, winning 14-13 against Diana Davies and Boyd Parry, also of Pembroke Dock BC.
After the main presentations to the winners and runners-up, with the presentations being carried out by Mrs. Jackie Church, West Wales Ladies Bowling Association president, a sit-down buffet was held in the clubhouse, along with a raffle, all donated by various club members and non members of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club.
