Disappointment and despair was the verdict of the first weekend of Pembrokeshire cricket with the majority of games falling foul of the weather. There were no games for Narberth and Whitland's second and third teams, while Kilgetty's first and seconds both had their first games washed out alongside Carew firsts who were meant to play at Lawrenny. No games were played in division two, although some matches were able to go ahead, with Narberth entertaining Saundersfoot in division one who scored 161-7 thanks to Simon Wood's 70 not out, in which he struck nine 4s and a six, and Steven Cole's 31, the pair putting on 76 for the fifth wicket. Simon Stanford also chipped in for the visitors with 21 as Kyle Quartermaine took 3-24 and Ian Hughes 3-31. With the game evenly poised at tea, the heavens opened and put paid to any sort of finish, with Narberth's batsmen unable to get some time in the middle ahead of a busy season. At Haverfordwest, Whitland batted first and were indebted to Paul Davies's 34 and Kevin Pearce's 26 in their total of 143-9. Adam James took 3-49 for the home side, A.J.Revu took 4-20, while Clive Tucker took 2-26, although he would play a bigger part in the game later on. Whitland started brightly as they reduced the Town to 0-2 at one stage, but Danny Potter's 23, Jonathan Strawbridge's 40 and Revu's 38 helped inch the home side closer to victory, yet with nine wickets down and three needed off the final over, the nerves were jangling for both sides. Up stepped, Tucker, a self-confessed rabbit with a bat in his hands, to lead the team home as he blasted a three to help them cross the line in what will surely be one of the closest games seen this year, despite it only being the first match. For Whitland, David Dunfee starred with the ball, taking 4-22, while Mark Lee took 3-27. So despair for Whitland in a final over defeat, with Cresselly almost going down with just balls to spare before they crept over the line. They were at Llanrhian and would have had high hopes of an easy win, given it was Ben Jones's wedding the day before, yet the new groom was in fine fettle as he shrugged off the effects of the previous night to score an unbeaten 86 in their innings of 217-4. Cresselly started well, but it was Damian Arthur's 72 and Simon Cole's 58 that helped see them home, although with four needed off the final over, they conspired to lose three wickets, before Lyn Richards scampered the team home for a two-wicket win. In division three, Lamphey were 60-9 before rain ruined their match against Neyland seconds, while in division four, Hundleton got off to a winning start thanks to a 37 run win over Herbrandston seconds. Hundleton scored 123-6 thanks to Phillip Price's 68, before bowling them out for 86, with Price taking 4-18. Lawrenny seconds lost against their counterparts from Burton after managing just 70-8 in their innings, with Barry Phillips scoring 23, before Toby Hayman and Richard Phillips saw the home team to victory with a 10-wicket win. Pembroke seconds eased to a 10-wicket win over St. Ishmaels' seconds after skittling the home side for 28. Nigel Phillips took 4-11 and Sam Davies 4-16. In reply, Don Patel scored 17 not out and Gareth Mitchell an unbeaten 9. Elsewhere, Hundleton seconds lost to Stackpole seconds after being bowled out for 67 in reply to the visitors' 151-7. James Adie scored 87 not out for the away team and Roger Lewis 37 and Riaan Strydom took 4-31, while the wickets went to Lewys Gibby (3-18) and Adam Seaton (3-11) as only John Tysoe with 12 caused the victors problems. Only one game was played in division six, with Camrose seconds beating Lamphey seconds by four wickets as Lamphey were all out for 79 thanks to Giuseppe Tremarco's 41. In reply, Nathan Mounter took 2-9 and Kyle Wetherall 2-23 in the defeat, although it wasn't as easy as the scoreline suggests.
