Narberth RFC celebrated the completion of the 2013/14 season with their annual dinner and presentation evening, held at the clubhouse. The evening commenced with the presentation of the Youth XV awards. The squad had experienced a season of mixed results, but the coaches, Allan Williams, Randall Evans and Bobby Simons , had worked hard and the spirit in the squad was strong. Awards went to Rhodri Evans, who was awarded the Players Player of the Season, and also the Coaches Player of the Season. The Most Improved Player award went to Lucas Ridge. This was followed by an address director of rugby Jonathon Dodd, who explained that it had been a great season, with hard work being done behind the scenes. He had set three aims for the season, to stay in the Championship, to involve more local players and to play an attractive style of rugby. All three had been achieved. The club lost 11 players at the end of the previous season and 75 per cent of the new players joining the squad were local. In addition, eight players were under the age of 22. When the club beat Pontypool at home, three players were under the age of 18. Jon explained it was his 11th year as coach at Narberth and the season had been one of the highest quality. In finishing in fifth place in the league, the team had taken its foot off the pedal; the squad could quite easily have finished second. Two wins stood out, against Bargoed and champions Ebbw Vale, both who were well beaten on the day. A few players are leaving, namely flanker Dylan Richards and James Russell, both moving to London, with Nick Gale off to Bath University. Retiring after successful careers in Welsh rugby are Richard Davies, who was the glue within the team, and Adrian Killa. Adrian has been with the club for 11 outstanding years, playing 243 games and scoring 42 tries. The spirit that was within the squad was led by Sean Lloyd, Steve Mason and Alex Jenkins. This sense of spirit and togetherness made for a very special squad. Jon announced the awards as follows: Players Player of the Year - Stuart Worrall; Most tries scored in the season - shared by Nick Gale and Steve Martin; Coaches Player of the Year - Stuart Worrall; Most Promising Player of the Year - Ollie Evans; Most Appearances was shared by Ianto Griffiths, Dan Smith, Alex Jenkins and Tom Slater. The Club Loyalty Award went to Sean Lloyd. Club captain Steve Martin, on behalf of the players, thanked coaches, officials, back room staff, stewardess Anne Lonsdale and staff, and also the supporters for their efforts and enthusiasm, which was greatly appreciated by all the players. Next to speak was club chairman John Owen, who made a point of particularly thanking G. D. Harries & Sons Ltd. for their very important sponsorship, the supporters and Supporters Club, and Bill Ridge for his personal effort with sponsors. He thanked the committees, Anne Lonsdale and staff, the club coaches and said how proud the club was of their achievements with the 1st XV. He expressed disappointment at the past season for the Athletic, but looked forward to the strong Youth squad moving upward into the Athletic. Overall, the club playing future was promising. He congratulated the Junior Section on reaching the regional finals with the Under 13 and Under 15 squads. He then announced two awards, voted for by the committee. The first, the Mansel Young Trophy for Clubman of the Year, went to Dorian Howells in recognition of his unstinting daily efforts for the club. The second, a Lifetime Achievement Award, went to Dwyfor Morgan, who as a player, chairman and physio (magic sponge) has given many years of service to the club. The main speaker and guest for the evening, Kingsley Jones, rose to give an unscripted address based on a lifetime in rugby and, firstly, as a past Ebbw Vale player, congratulated the club on their win the previous Saturday. He explained how he became a journey man representing Gwent clubs, Wales, including as captain, playing in the English premiership with Gloucester and Sale, coaching at Doncaster, Sale, London Welsh, the Dragon Region and latterly coach of Russia. He reminisced humorously of his early years with Blaina and the famous Gwent clubs, highlighting some of the characters involved and then latterly his experiences as a coach in Russia, where he was flying out to the following day. His talk was greatly appreciated by those present, bringing the formal activities to an end. The compere for the evening was club secretary, Mark Rhys Owens, who made events move apace and with simplicity. He especially thanked the social committee for their work in producing a successful evening. The evening ended with dancing to popular music provided by the Andrew Jenkins Disco.
