LLANGWM 14 pts. PEMBROKE DOCK QUINS 29
The Quins came away from a damp Pill Parks on Saturday with their expected bonus point, although they were made to fight all the way by a determined Llangwm side.
The Quins took only eight minutes to open the scoring when second row Mark Van Rhyn forced his way over the Wasps' goal line after sustained pressure. Outside-half Jonathan Rogers missed the conversion.
The Quins, with a dominant scrum once again, with Dai Moseley, Carl Williams and Peter Roach excelling, were always in the driving seat.
But for all their domination they failed to add to the scoresheet in the early exchanges, due mainly to poor decision-making.
The Quins had to wait until the 32nd minute for their next score, which came when scrum-half Adam Cawley took a quick tap penalty five yards from the Wasps line to slip his way over. Jonathan Rogers again missed the conversion.
As half-time approached, the Quins nearly added a third try when Adam Cawley raced up the left, only to be hauled down in the corner.
The referee blew for half-time, but many Quins supporters thought they should have been more than 10 points ahead.
As the second half started, the heavens opened, making the surface treacherous, but it did not stop the Quins when a fine offload from right wing Liam Smith sent centre Sam Irwin in for their third try. Rogers pushed his kick wide in the difficult conditions.
The all-important bonus point try was not long in coming when an unstoppable maul was dragged down close to the Wasps' line and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty try. This time Rogers had no trouble in adding the extras from in front of the sticks to put the Quins 0-22 in front.
If the Quins were to think they had the game in the bag, though, they received a nasty shock when the Wasps scored two tries in the space of five minutes. First second row Lawrence Holder forced his way over near the posts and then when replacement prop Richard McIntyre had his kick charged down, wing Daniel Morgan took advantage of a fortunate bounce to touch down underneath the Quins posts. Jon Brock converted both to pull the score back to 14-22.
The home side now had a bit of momentum as the match entered the final stages and a deserved bonus point was not beyond them, but sadly for the Wasps, it was the Quins who had the last say when Carl Williams burrowed over under a pile of bodies for his side's fifth try.
Jonathan Rogers converted with a fine kick in the poor conditions underfoot to send the Quins back over the bridge with their mission accomplished.
