This year's Welsh Tug of War Championships were held at the All Wales Truck Show in Carmarthen and local team Llanboidy were on top form, sweeping the board with five gold medals from five, without dropping an end all day.

Delighted coach Dorian Phillips praised his team for their outstanding effort.

"This is the first time in the long history of the club that we have won all five weights in the Welsh Championships, and even more pleasing was the way we pulled," he said. "All the hard training the boys have put in has really paid off, and on the day no one could touch us."

Closest to Llanboidy all day where Cupids Hill, from near the Hereford border, who claimed silver medals in all of the five weights.

In the ladies' weights, things were a little more even, with the Llangadog ladies winning the 520kg, Pentre ladies taking the 560kg and Cupids Hill ladies holding out to take the 580kg crown.

All of the winning teams will now have the opportunity to represent Wales in next weekend's UK Championships in Perth, Scotland.

After such a successful Welsh Championships, Llanboidy will be hoping to go one better than the silver medal they gained in last year's UK Championships, and defend their 700kg class title from 2012 in the UK Open Club Competition on Sunday.

The ever-popular YFC tug of war competition at the Royal Welsh Show again did not disappoint, with nine county teams in both the ladies' and men's classes, with the top four going through to compete in the semi-finals.

In the men's competition, it was Ceredigion, represented by Llanwenog, Pembrokeshire (Tiers Cross), Radnorshire and Meirionnydd, who made their way through to the semi-finals. After a shaky start, it was Llanwenog who held it together and went on to win the Welsh YFC title.

It was a win they fully deserved and credit must go to their young side and their ever-present coach Geraint Thomas for his commitment to the sport for over 40 years.

It was Radnorshire who had to settle for second place.

In the ladies' competition, it was again a fiercely fought contest, and the first pull of the day was a neighbourly battle between Llangadog girls, representing Carmarthenshire, and the Pembrokeshire girls of Hermon, who were representing their county for the first time in the Royal Welsh. It was the impressive Hermon girls who went on to take the victory and qualified top of their group, only dropping one end. They went on to beat Gwent in the semi-finals, but just fell short in the final, losing to a very experience Radnorshire side.

But the young and relatively inexperienced Pembrokeshire side have definitely made an impression and will be the team to watch in the future. With their cool coach Bill Davies at the helm, silverware will surely follow soon.

Llanboidy boys rounded of a successful day for the West Walians by winning both weights in the open competition for the fourth consecutive year. On their current form, they are very capable of taking gold at the UK Championships. Best of luck to all the Welsh teams this weekend.
