Carmarthenshire dairy farmer Norman Evans was glad to see the decision to allow his son Hywel to 'take the lorry and the cheque book to Ascot sales to buy a horse without me', was a good one, as he welcomed in the purchase, Tom Bach, as winner of the 'Restricted Race' at Tivyside Point to Point.
Confidently ridden by Nathan Deakin, it proved to be a real battle between Norman's horse and eventual runner up Moscowbarney ridden by Matthew Barber, with only a neck separating them on the line.
Only four went to post in the 'Connolly's Red Mills Intermediate Race', but, it proved to be a very competitive affair, with Alan Johns and Udeman getting the upper hand by two lengths from Renta Gallery and John Mathias.
Previously a well-rated hurdler in Ireland, Udeman will be an interesting runner if lining up for the sponsors Intermediate Hunter Chase Final at Cheltenham on May 2.
Mathias began the day with three second place rides before making the winning post his in the 'Men's Open', aboard Rosies Peacock, the geldings ninth point to point victory for owner/trainer David Llewellyn.
The Llewellyn/Mathias team came so close to a double in the 'Confined Race', with The Old Pretender, but James Tudor and the inappropriately named, The Snail, held them by three-quarters-of-a-length, in what turned out to be the fastest time of the day.
Mathias went on to make it a double for the meeting in the 'Maiden Race' when riding for his father Philip, who trains six-yea-old Towering Run for the 10 members of the Just the Wan syndicate, later revealed to be a reference to the group's drinking habits after closing time is called!
Again, the judge was kept busy with a close finish, but nothing compared to the Ladies' Open race where four horses jumped the last upsides.
Charlotte Pritchard, aboard her father Ian's Alroya, appeared to find the pace a little too hot on the first two circuits dropping out to the rear of the six runner field, but, Charlotte kept a cool head and steadily reeled in the pacemakers finishing two lengths to the good at the line over hot favourite Rapid Artist and Jodie Hughes.
Wayne Maskill and Major Decision made it two wins from two starts in the Opening Hunt Members Race, putting Wayne in a strong position at the top of the Novice Riders table in Wales.
Area action now moves on to Lydstep for an Easter holiday double header, the South Pembrokeshire on Easter Monday, April 9, and the WWAC meeting on April 15.
