As the sun shone on Trefloyne’s first Ladies’ Open (June 13) for many years, almost fifty players from a wide range of clubs played a three ball, best two scores stableford, on a course that everybody agreed was in excellent condition.

The prizes for the top home team went to Marion Payne, Jean Haig and Gill Rogers with an outstanding 84 points.

And South Pembs did splendidly in the visitors category, with Debra Powell, Lynne Perry and Annie Hyams scoring 81, but just losing out over the back nine to the same score from Christina Jackson, Hilary Harries and Carol Leslie.

Jan Whiting and Carol Leslie shared the twos, Julie Tordoff hit the longest drive and Trefloyne Ladies’ Captain Rosie Moore was nearest the pin.

And thanks to all the Trefloyne members who went out of their way to help make it such a success. Meurig and Phil acted as starters, with Derek Campbell and Dave Crowley dispensing jugs of Pimm's, soft drinks and snacks from the halfway shack.

Eifion Price, Peter Tarry, Derek Jones, Ian Whiting, Andy Payne were on ball-spotting duty all day in the heat, and Ryan Townsend looked after all the admin in the shop… not to mention Robin, with Darcy the dog who kept everyone amused!

On a glorious day on June 24, this year’s Men’s Open drew more than 100 players from across South and West Wales, playing stableford in two divisions; 0–15 handicap and 16–54. And it was Division 2 players who took the top seven spots, with Trefloyne accounting for the first six.

The overall winner was Robin Lewis who carded a tremendous 46 points off 32, closely followed by Phil Belfield (34) one shot behind. Third and fourth both came in with 40, Francesco Zeraschi easing out Mervyn Gillespie on the back nine.

In Division 1, 37 turned out to be a very popular score, shared by the top four players.

When the back nine sorted it out Trefloyne’s own Randal Day just took first place from Haverfordwest’s Ron Bashford, who in turn pipped Trefloyne’s Matt Hughes, who just nudged ahead of Robin Lloyd, also Trefloyne.

A great day with some splendid craic on the terrace afterwards, with the greenkeeping team of Matt and his Merry Men once again coming in for serious praise for the course condition, especially the greens that are running fast and true.
