Tuesday, February 9 -Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day - and last but not least, the date for Tenby Seniors to play their 12th Stableford Eclectic. Thirty-two Seniors entered this competition on a day of sunshine, strong breezes and an absence of rain for the majority of the field.
Allen Watts made an impressive start by scoring a birdie on each of the first three holes, but later his progress was marred by soggy sanded, unraked bunkers, and he had to produce some really good golf shots to avoid slipping back into the pack.
Further down the starting list, a few players were beginning to forge ahead, and it was only after all 32 cards had been processed that the score required to win the day was determined.
In sort-of reverse order, the list of money winners looked like this:
Three 2s were recorded - strangely all on the most difficult of the par threes, hole 12. The accurate Seniors were Wyndham Collins, Idwal David and James Moffatt.
In the Stableford eclectic, fourth place was claimed by Allen Watts with 34 points off a handicap of seven, third spot went to Roger Scholfield with his 37 points off a 19 handicap, while Bart Youll, who appears to be enjoying a ‘Purple Patch’ eased into second place with a splendid 38 points, assisted by a splendid handicap of 28 shots (now reduced to 27 by a heartless computer!)
Leading from the front, on what may be termed a Legal High? - local Police Community Support Officer, ex Army SNCO and ex Police Officer - James Moffatt. James also scored 38 points (aided by his two) but beat Bart on the back nine (aided by his two).
The CSS for the day was 36 Stableford points, thus proving that the top three are above average golfers!
The £10 prize from the Charity Raffle held on Tuesday, February 2 - in addition to the rollover £10 from January 26 - was won by Ron Murphy, who thanked the organiser and confirmed that the win would not materially affect his life-style!
Captain Peter was absent on Six Nation spectator duties, so his role was ably conducted by our vice-captain, Dudley Williams - a natural orator with a mellifluous tenor voice.
And finally, one month today will see the start of the Summer season and consequently the end of the Chicken Trotter season. The Trotters will be marking the occasion with a competition for the Badham Trophy and the Danny Carew Putter, followed by a light lunch. The booking sheet will be displayed on the notice board very shortly, and I urge all Trotters and Seniors to support the event.
