PEMBROKE DOCK QUINS 12 pts.

FISHGUARD AND GOODWICK 23

The Quins, who were missing six players from last week's success over Pembroke, put up a valiant display against one of the league's pacesetters.

It was the Seagulls who struck first when outside-half James Griffiths struck a 35-yard penalty in the 15th minute to give the promotion hopefuls a useful start, but the Quins were not to be deterred by this.

The lineout was functioning very well, with number eight Gareth Scourfield winning some good ball at the back, while some strong running from Sam Irwin, Phil Hughes and Lee Scourfield was giving the visitors plenty to think about.

When the Quins were awarded a kickable penalty after 25 minutes, Lee Scourfield kicked for the corner flag, and from the resulting lineout the hosts drove towards the Seagulls line, but another infringement kept the pressure on.

The second time, however, the Quins made no mistake when flanker Phil Hughes was driven over in unstoppable fashion.

Neil Brace hit the crossbar with a fine attempt from the touchline, but things were certainly looking up as the Quins went in at the break 5-3 up.

The visitors started the second half in determined fashion and were soon back in front when James Griffiths put over a 30-yard penalty.

The match as a whole up to this point was difficult to call, but a dramatic change of events on the hour turned the match in the visitors' favour.

First Griffiths broke a tackle to race in unopposed to score under the posts and then five minutes later a fine show and go by experienced centre Huw Evans enabled him to also score under the posts.

Both tries were converted by Griffiths to put the Seagulls 20-5 in front.

At this point, there seemed no way back for the Quins, but 10 minutes from time, Lee Scourfield scored halfway out after a powerful run, which was converted by Brace, to maybe give the Quins a chance of a bonus point.

This, however, was not to be and when Griffiths put over a late penalty to finish with a haul of 18 points, any hopes the Quins had of getting anything out of match were extinguished.
