Pembroke Dock Quins 18 pts
Llangwm 15
The Quins pulled off their first win of the season over a determined Llangwm side who fought to the last in a game played in incessant rain throughout, but the game will long be remembered for the conversion that wasn't.
The Wasps got off to a flying start with a fine try after just four minutes when fullback Joe Kiff pounced on a Quins error on the home side's 10-metre line and fly-hacked the ball towards the goal-line, and, showing remarkable control in the conditions, touched down in the right-hand corner. He failed to convert his own try though.
The Wasps were having the better of the early exchanges, but what looked to be a serious injury to their outside-half Luke Brock seemed to take a bit of momentum away from them, but thankfully he was soon back on his feet.
The Wasps, after absorbing some Quins pressure, were soon back on the attack, and when the Quins transgressed in front of their own posts, Kiff slotted the penalty to put his side eight points clear.
After a slow start, the Quins were quietly getting into the game. A fine run by fullback Paul Jonkers put left wing Sam Richards away, but the winger was hauled down 10 yards from the line.
However, it was not to be long before the Quins struck, when a quick pick-up from scrum-half Nathan George at the base of the ruck sent outside-half Andrew Price on a powerful run towards the Llangwm line where he managed to touch down just beside the posts.
Quins centre Danny Woods thought he had converted it, as both touch judges' flags went up straight away, and as the conditions were poor, all the spectators thought it was over too, while the hardened few sheltering under the trees had no doubt either.
But the referee disallowed the conversion as Llangwm's lead was cut to 8-5.
The Quins went straight back on the offensive and forced a penalty, which Price goaled to draw the sides level at half-time.
As the second half started, it was clear the result was up for grabs as both sides battled in the poor conditions, but it was the Wasps who struck first when centre Stephen Inward touched down halfway out after a determined run.
Kiff converted to put his side 15-8 in the lead.
The Quins, though, especially with the introduction of replacement Dean Wilcox, started to up the ante, and it was no surprise when they forced a score through outstanding flanker Stefan Hallwood, who forced his way over halfway out.
Price missed the conversion and, with the score now at 15-13 (although the crowd thought it was 15-15!), the next score was going to be crucial.
With just eight minutes remaining, it was Jonkers, a threat all afternoon with ball in hand, who made a fine break on his 10-yard line and passed to Danny Woods, who stepped inside his man before running in from 40 yards, not needing replacement wing Lewis Beecher outside him. Price missed the conversion.
As time ticked away, the Quins were penalised for holding on and as everybody expected a kick to the corner, Kiff decided to go for goal to try and level the match, which had everybody scratching their heads, but fortunately for the Quins, he pushed his kick to the left of the uprights.
