A local cricketer will be swapping Carew for Cape Town this month when he represents Wales at the upcoming Over 50s Cricket World Cup tournament in South Africa

Fifty-one-year-old Simon Wood of Carew Cricket Club (formerly of Kilgetty and Saundersfoot) will be one of the team’s key allrounders, as a right hand middle order batsman and medium pace bowler.

Simon (nicknamed Woodie) is proud to be following in the footsteps of his dad Barry in playing for the Over 50s Welsh team.

There will be 14 countries taking part in the World Cup which takes place between March 6 and 20, including all major test playing countries.

Simon has been sponsored by several companies, including Parkwall Caravans with Gail Thomas from the Templeton based firm pictured with Simon as he gave thanks for the support.

Simon would also like to thank all the other businesses and individuals who have also sponsored him and the team.

Big thanks also go to his parents Barry and Brenda and his wife Donna for their ongoing support.

A spoksperson for the welsh team said: “Pembrokeshire Cricket is well represented by Simon and we know that Carew Cricket will be giving huge support to him as one of their own!

“It’s fabulous that we have cricketers from all parts of Wales in our Over 50s Cricket World Cup squad.”

Good luck Simon, bring it home!
