Carew need just nine points from the final league game against Cresselly tomorrow (Saturday) to guarantee winning the first division title thus denying their opponents the same accolade.
Cresselly sit 21 points behind the Rooks heading into the weekend’s fixture and a betting man may have his money on Carew securing enough points to win it, but nothing is certain in cricket until the lady with the half decent voice sings.
Brian Hall’s men warmed up for the weekend’s game of the season by smashing Whitland away. They secured a 10-wicket win after bowling the Borderers out for just 43 on a wet track. Tom Davies took 4-17 and Rhys Davies 6-20. Tom then secured the win by hitting 31 not out in the easy win.
Cresselly, meanwhile, entertained Kilgetty and had the Kingsmoor outfit on the ropes at 41-4, but an innings of 26 by Kyle Marsh and 25 from Ian Poole helped turn that around to post 167 all out, Tom Arthur taking 4-25.
In reply, Adam Chandler hit a stylish 81 not out and Dan Cherry 58 not out to secure the win.
The result saw Kilgetty slip into the relegation zone after Johnston beat Haverfordwest.
It’s not just at the top where teams have things to play for this weekend.
In division two, Narberth’s hopes of going up with Llangwm took a hit after they lost by six wickets at home to Whitland seconds, the win helping their relegation fight at the other end of the table.
Narberth are now just six points ahead of third placed Burton who beat Llanrhian.
A return of 4-9 from Geraint Phillips and two wickets each for Mathew Davies and Greg Sleep helped Whitland bowl Narberth out for 80, with Jordan Howell hitting 29.
Jack Bowen then smashed 41 not out to seal the win.
Carew seconds lost at home to Llangwm by eight wickets after being bowled out for 118, with Dai Rees top scoring on 33, while Stackpole did their survival hopes no harm with a six-wicket win over Saundersfoot.
Saundersfoot were all out for 152, Sam Franklin hitting 75 and Tom Mansbridge 40.
A fine 81 from Rob Mathias and 55 not out from Josh Davies helped the Lilies win.
Simon Bevan was in the wickets for the winners, taking 5-23, while Franklin took 3-12 for the home team.
Cresselly seconds’ hopes of being promoted from division three took a hit after they were held to a losing draw away at Lamphey.
A win for the Stags would have given their faint promotion hopes a boost, but Cresselly’s batting was unyielding.
Lamphey scored 133-9 thanks to Pete MgGilloway’s 39 and Dave Blackwell’s 28. Simon Cole took 3-31 for Cresselly.
Two early wickets from Grant Cole stalled Cresselly’s reply, with Blackwell also taking a brace as Cresselly ended up 126-6.
Rhydian Rees hit 42 and Paul Webb 31 not out.
Lawrenny seconds were away at Herbrandston and they were unable to help their neighbours up the road at Cresselly after going down by seven wickets. The win ensured Herbie leapfrogged Cresselly in the table, which gives them a five-point cushion over Steffan Jenkins’s men.
Lawrenny were all out for 143, with Andrew Cole hitting 54 and Steve Campbell 31, but the hosts had few issues in seeing off the runs.
Craig Butland hit 91 not out for Pembroke Dock, although they couldn’t prevent Neyland winning off the last over as they overcame the hosts’ 179-3 to win by two wickets.
Luke Murray hit 38 for the home team and Nick Daley 24.
In division four, Kilgetty seconds beat Hundleton by three wickets after bowling the visitors out for 79. Levi Hughes took 3-5 for the hosts, Andrew Evans 3-34 and Ollie Gamble 3-2. John Williams top scored for Hundleton with 19.
In reply, Evans hit 21 and Gamble 22 not out.
Pembroke seconds failed to raise a side for their home clash with Narberth seconds, thus awarding the win to the visitors, while Saundersfoot seconds beat Burton seconds by four wickets after overcoming their 119-6.
Spencer O’Rourke struck 29 for the winners, Cory Morris 22 and Mathew O’Neil took 3-30.
Meanwhile, in Division Five, Laugharne were presented with their division five winners trophy by county chairman Paul Webb prior to their win over Neyland thirds.
The champs bowled Neyland out for 78, with James Incleton taking 7-9. He hit 35 not out in the reply, while Kevin Pearce struck 30 not out.
Carew thirds lost at home to Cresselly thirds, who were also playing at home as the teams share the picturesque ground overlooking Carew Castle.
With both teams knowing the conditions so well, Cresselly were on top, bowling the home team out for just 54, with Megan Arthur taking 5-32. Ashley Smith hit 28 for Carew.
Finally at Stackpole, the home team’s seconds beat Pembroke Dock seconds by seven wickets.
The Dock were all out for 81, with Steve Alford scoring 25. Russell Roberts took 3-18 for the Lilies and Katherine Adams 3-13.
Andrew Wood took 3-11 for the Dock and John Hay 3-20, but 27 from Jonathan Hughes sealed the deal for the hosts.
