In an absorbing and exciting semi-final at Pembroke Dock, where nearly 400 runs were scored in ideal conditions, Cresselly defeated Narberth by 17 runs to book a place in the final of the Thomas Scourfield and Sons Harrison-Allen Bowl. Cresselly built up the formidable total of 204-8. Left hander Simon Cole scored 59 after skipper Phil Williams scored 32 and his young opening partner Matthew Morgan 36. For Narberth, Ben Hughes finished with 3-57 and the accurate Ian Hughes bowled his brisk left arm spinners tightly to claim 2-36. Many teams would have been daunted by the 200 plus total, but not Narberth despite the contrasting fortunes of the two sides in Division One this season. Opener Marc Hughes had led the Pembrokeshire side to a narrow win over the South Wales Association earlier in the season, when the win robbed him of a century and he knew just how good this ground was. The pitch was true, the ball came on to the bat, the outfield fast and Hughes played an innings which will go down in Harrison-Allen folklore. His opening partner Richard Adams was also on form and the pair took Narberth to 51 without loss in the first five overs. When Adams fell for 20 it put a brake on the scoring, but the scoreboard still kept ticking over as Ben Quatermaine scored 29 before being caught by Mike Shaw off the bowling of Stefan Jenkins. With Hughes at the crease, there was always hope for the Narberth supporters in the large crowd around the outfield. His timing was sublime for the orthodox shots and he used his power to get across or over the boundary with some shots out of the Hughes collection. It was effective and in tandem with Aron Keane the Narberth victory bid was very much alive. With 20 runs needed of the last two overs, it was game on especially at the runs at which runs had been accumulated. Phil Williams then produced what turned out to be a brilliant tactical decision by calling up 15 year old Tom Murphy to bowl his second spell. With 20 runs required from the last two over, how would Tom Murphy stop the Narberth runs spree? Watched by his parents, sister and elder brother Jack who is on the Glamorgan staff, the youngster bowled fast, short of a length balls outside off stump. Keane found it hard to get bat on ball until he edged one. With spectators looking towards the third man boundary, keeper Neilson Cole pulled off a great one handed diving catch to dismiss Aron Keane for 29 invaluable runs. Remarkably, only one run came from the over and that was a wide. Nevertheless, Narberth were still in the game with 19 runs needed to win off the last over. Marc Hughes had to look for runs off every ball. When he went for a big off drive, it proved to be one big shot too many and he was caught by Simon Cole off the bowling of Stefan Jenkins. He was applauded all of the way back to the pavilion after a heroic innings of 96 with 13 fours and two sixes and his dismissal signalled the end of the Narberth challenge. At the close Narberth had reached 190-6. Stefan Jenkins took 3-48 and Tom Murphy 2-34. In the other semi-final at Kilgetty, again on a glorious evening and in front of a large crowd, it was a different story and more of s one sided match. Haverfordwest posted a large total of 207 all out and bowled Whitland out in reply for 130 to win by 77 runs. Simon Holliday scored 72 and added 63 for the second wicket with David Davies who scored 38. Three other batsmen contributed very useful knocks with 24 from Jonathan Strawbridge, 23 from Adam James and 21 from Ben Fields. Whitland all-rounder Jonathan Thomas picked up three wickets in the last over to finish with 5-27 and Mark Lee took 2-40 earlier in the innings. The Whitland batsmen found it impossible to maintain the required runs rate without losing wickets at the same time, so that the Haverfordwest bowlers made substantial inroads into the batting line-up. Jonathan Thomas made the major impact for Whitland in his knock of 46 with four fours and two sixes and the major support came from Scott Newton with 27 and Mark Lee with 15no. For Haverfordwest, Ajay Revu took 3-38, Josh Wilment 3-38 and Clive Tucker 2-22. Cresselly will play Haverfordwest in the final at Cresselly on Saturday, August 23, commencing at 12.00pm.
