Many congratulations to our team of Keith Rees (capt), Simon Davies, Bob Veale, Peter Johnson, Mike Bradney, Brian Williams, Kevin Dewhurst and Paul Nixon, who brought home the Seniors Classic Bowl to South Pembrokeshire Golf Club After a long hard fought campaign, starting back in April at Alice Springs Golf Club (Usk), we battled through a hot summer of golf taking in matches against Grove Golf Club in May, Llantrisant in June. The quarter-finals were at Woodlake Park (Pontypool) in July, the semi-finals at Grove Golf Club (Porthcawl) in August and then the big one, the finals at Clyne Golf Club (Swansea) last Friday. In the final we were playing against Llanishen Golf Club, who had travelled down from Cardiff, teeing-off 11.30 am, so game on. This was the first time some of our team (including myself) had played at Clyne and as it turned out the experience will be etched in the memory banks for a long time. Most golf courses have hazards such as bunkers, water features, ditches etc. But here there were some additional ones which included cows, horses, sheep (often sunning themselves in the bunkers) and greens which were fenced off with an electrified wire! So, as you could imagine, it developed into a very interesting day. A qualification in zoo-keeping would have helped After our team focused on the job in hand (apart from the natural and manmade distractions) they emerged as worthy winners of the final with a score of 2.5 to .5, a wonderful result after some tough matches in the run-up to the finals The team results on the day were as follows: Keith and Simon won 4 and 3, Bob and Peter halved their match and Brian and Mike won 3 and 2, so well done gentlemen, South Pembrokeshire Golf Club is duly proud. The day was rounded off with a meal and presentation of the awards and a few words and jokes from the president of the Seniors Classic, Mr. Max Boyce (who himself is recovering from major surgery). I would like to thank Mr. Howell Craven and the rest of the organising committee for putting on this prestigious event and hope to see the trophy being won by South Pembrokeshire Golf Club next year and many years to come. Thanks also to 'Tee R Us' for sponsoring the team colours for the day and to the gods of golf for being in our corner, especially for the weather. A wonderful result played in the true spirit of seniors golf - well done to SPGC. The seniors are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in playing, please contact Mick Seal at the club - 15 months membership for £395.
