The Mayor of Carmarthen has congratulated local athletes who represented Team Wales with such distinction at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Following outstanding performances on the international stage, including the unique achievement by cyclist Emma Finucane in winning four gold medals, Carmarthen is preparing to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of all local competitors who flew the flag for Wales.

Highlighting the journey of Carmarthen’s world-class cyclists Emma Finucane and Jess Roberts in particular, the Mayor Cllr Russell Sparks reflected that they both developed their early skills on the town's historic outdoor velodrome with the Towy Riders cycling club, laying the foundations for their international sporting success.

The Mayor of Carmarthensaid: "On behalf of the people of Carmarthen, I offer my warmest congratulations to our fantastic local competitors following their achievements at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“To see Emma Finucane and Jess Roberts and all our other athletes performing at the very highest level for Team Wales is a source of pride for our community. Watching them progress from enthusiastic children riding around Carmarthen Velodrome to champion athletes competing on the global stage is inspiring. Their achievements reflect years of hard work, discipline, and dedication.

“Success like this is never built in isolation. We owe gratitude to the dedicated volunteers, grassroots coaches, family members, and local cycling clubs who give up their time week after week to nurture young talent. Equal praise goes to the support staff and leaders at Team Wales, whose guidance enables our athletes to shine.

“Carmarthen Town Council is currently discussing plans to officially mark the success of all our local Commonwealth competitors.

“It also testifies that the investment in renovating our velodrome ten years ago is proving to be worth its weight in gold – literally!

Carmarthenshire County Council has also offered congratulations to Emma and Jess, along with Rory Gravelle, Steffan Lloyd and Steffan James for their success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Record-breaking Carmarthenshire Sports Personality of the Year winner, Emma Finucane, became the first track cyclist ever to win four gold medals in a single Commonwealth Games in the Women’s Team Sprint, Women’s Sprint, Women’s 1000m Time Trial and Women’s Keirin and led Wales into the closing ceremony of the Games.

Steffan James achieved a bronze medal at his first ever Commonwealth Games, representing Wales in the Para Mixed Pairs bowls following a closely fought contest.

Former Queen Elizabeth High School pupil, Rory Gravelle represented Wales as part of the Men's Pursuit squad, securing fourth place, as well as competing in the Men’s Elimination Race.

Steffan Lloyd competed in four track cycling events including the Men’s Team Sprint, where Team Wales recorded a time of 44.075, the Keirin, the Individual Sprint and the 1000m Time Trial where he finished sixth.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans, said: “Congratulations to the Carmarthenshire athletes who represented Team Wales at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Their journey from talented local sportspeople to international champions is a testament to their hard work and the unwavering support from the community.”
