Ladies Open Triples Competition
The 23rd annual ladies open triples competition was held at the Memorial Park, Pembroke Dock, last Saturday, with 16 teams from throughout the county competing for the prestigious trophy.
The event was played as a ‘round robin’ format which meant a full day of bowling for the 48 talented lady players with many splendid matches taking place on a fine summer’s day.
The final got under way late afternoon and congratulations go to Kath Jenner, Sue Evans and Cally Jones, of Whitland, who won the coveted shield. They bowled extremely well throughout the competition and ran out winners beating Mary Richards, Mary Codd and Win Howells, of Haverfordwest, in the keenly contested final.
The shield was presented to the victors by Diana Davies, president of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club.
The event ran smoothly thanks to the superb organisational skills of Gerard Thomas and the ladies from Pembroke Dock BC deserve a special mention for their excellent catering, keeping competitors and spectators well fed throughout the day. The green was in excellent condition and many compliments were extended to the green-keeping volunteers for their hard work in ensuring that the playing surface was in tip top condition.Pendine v Pembroke Dock Following last week’s excellent win against Haverfordwest, The Dock journeyed east to Pendine last Sunday in a relaxed mood, but apprehensive that over the years, The Seasiders has been their ‘bogey’ team. However, thanks to an impressive team effort, The Dock maintained their good form of late and returned home with the maximum 14 points. The match was contested on an excellent playing surface on a sunny afternoon with a slight sea breeze off Carmarthen Bay keeping the temperature down.Rink one: The rink of Tudor Harries, Hugh Colley, Hugh Williams and Matt John has in recent matches failed to secure victory from winning positions. At the interval, they led by a single shot and despite some fine bowling by the Pendine skip, Arwel Edwards, who pulled off some tremendous ‘saves’, Matt’s men were victorious 22-16.Rink two: Thanks to a fine all-round performance by all four, captain Richard Jones and his rink of Allistair Benn, Boyd Parry, and Ken Edwards also enjoyed an excellent win. The Dock four led from start to finish in a relatively low scoring game, with neither side managing to register a count of more than two shots. Consistent bowling by all four resulted in an 18-8 win.Rink three: Once again, the established rink of Paul Griffiths, Jerry Carroll, Reg Thomas and Richard Hissey enjoyed an excellent encounter against a rink led by vastly experienced David King-Thomas. The blend of relatively youthful exuberance at the front end (Paul and Jerry) combined with age and experience at the back end (Reg and Richard) is certainly paying dividends. Going into the interval, The Dock quartet held a 16-8 lead, but rammed home their advantage in the latter stages running out winners 34-14.Rink four: Again, another fine all-round performance by Brian Dowling’s rink of Alan Yea, Karl Bierschenk and Dave Halward who all made valuable contributions to the cause. Brian’s rink led from the third end onwards and never looked back, despite conceding two counts of four shots in the second half they ran out winners 26-15.After a hugely disappointing start to the season, this was another excellent performance by Pembroke Dock which consolidated a respectable mid-table position in the league table. Full marks to the selectors for resisting the opportunity to chop and change the rink formations - the decision to persevere with playing established rinks has paid off. Final score: Pembroke Dock 100 (14 points) Pendine 53 (0). Tomorrow (Saturday), it’s a short journey across the Cleddau Bridge to take on Milford Haven. H.C.
