A dramatic last bowl by skip Kieran Peregrine ensured Tenby earned themselves a place in the national club championship final and a chance to bid for Carruthers Shield glory at Llandrindod Wells on Saturday.

In similar scenes to when the Sutton Street club won the coveted title in 2009, the semi-final against RTB Ebbw Vale, who had beaten Tenby twice at this stage previously, went right to the wire.

With two rinks off - those skipped by Craig Guymer and Lee Williamson, who incidentally both returned winning cards - it was all down to the rinks of Kieran and Paul Diment to determine the Giltar Hotel sponsored side’s fate.

Three shots up on the board overall, Paul was one down in the head on his rink, while Kieran was lying three until newly-crowned Welsh singles champion Jon Tomlinson produced an accurate strike and sprung the jack for four.

With the game in the balance, Kieran magnificently produced that all-important match-winning shot, drawing second bowl and sending his team and their spectators wild with elation as Tenby earned a thrilling 72-71 victory.

Sadly, though, that momentum failed to follow them to the afternoon’s final against Harlequins, the team they had beaten in the semi-final back in their glory year of 2009.

As the sun appeared and the Rock Park green started to sizzle, so did the Harlequins side, who produced some scintillating bowls as they returned three out of four winning rinks to lift the blue riband shield by an 18-shot margin, 81-63.

After the game, we spoke to Paul Diment, who said that the team were naturally very disappointed, but also very proud to have beaten the mighty RTB Ebbw Vale team.

“Naturally, Tenby would like to congratulate the Harlequins team on their deserved win,” he added, “but such was the intensity of our four-hour win over RTB, that the team seemed to lack the necessary spark in the final, caused, in my opinion, by the mental and physical sacrifice of that first match.

“The Harlequins team defeated their semi-final opponents, Pontrhydyfen, fairly comfortably and were finished an hour before we completed our game.

“Again, we have proved that we are one of the top teams in Wales and with such a young team, we are confident that we can progress from this and have success in the future.”

Thanks go to all the Tenby supporters who travelled to watch and cheer on the team and Tim Thomas for his help in arranging transport.
