UWIC 9 pts.
Whitland 1st XV 19
Whitland took the spoils on the road with a great win away at UWIC on Saturday.
It was a true team performance, with everyone playing for each other and giving 110 per cent as the Borderers brushed off the cobwebs from from a four-week lay-off and ran out convincing winners by 19 points to nine.
In the first half, it was a penalty from fullback James Stephenson after 15 minutes which gave Whitland a slender three-point lead at the break.
Three minutes into the second half, UWIC's captain and number 10 Rhys Roberts levelled the score with his first penalty, before great play by Whitland's forwards and backs resulted in flanker Ryan Michael getting the only try of the match some five minutes later. Stephenson added the extras with a successful conversion.
Roberts added his second penalty after 12 minutes, while Stephenson banged over his second six minutes later to extend Whitland's lead to 13 points to six.
Again Roberts cut the lead to four points with his third penalty some three minutes later, but UWIC then ran out of steam as Whitland dominated the last quarter and were unlucky not to add to their try count, but it was left to James Stephenson to slot two further penatlies to give the final scoreline of 19 points to nine to Whitland and a well-deserved victory.
In this sort of game, it's so difficult to upset players by not mentioning them for their performances, but it was a true squad preformance, with everyone playing for each other and the team.
Well done to all of them; it was a game well worth watching.
