BYNEA 15 pts.
PEMBROKE DOCK
QUINS 27
The Quins collected a well-earned bonus point win against lowly Bynea on Saturday, on a cold, sunny day, on probably the best ground in the league.
It was the home side that struck first when outside-half Rob Charles nailed a straightforward penalty after an early Quins discretion in the third minute of the match.
The Quins went straight on the attack and forced two penalty shots at goal, which outside-half Jonathan Rogers narrowly missed.
At this stage of the match, it seemed only a matter of time before the Quins would draw level and at the third time of asking, Rogers duly obliged.
From this point on it was relentless pressure from the Quins and inevitable that they would get over the whitewash.
Adam Cawley and Kevin Bratcher each went desperately close on two occasions each, as the Quins pack dominated, but it was not until the half-hour mark that Bynea's defence was at last breached when the visitors forced a five-yard scrum which ended with number eight Gareth Scourfield touching down.
Rogers slotted the conversion to give the Quins the lead, which they were never going to lose.
Flanker Alex Pierce, who has had an outstanding season, soon grabbed the Quins' second try when he was on the shoulder of Bratcher to touch down near the posts.
Rogers popped over the conversion to send the Quins in 17-3 up at the interval.
As the second half started, it seemed the Quins' dominant first half display would see them home easily, but this was not to be.
This time it was the Quins who were forced on the defensive, but with centre Lee Scourfield in particular putting in an immense defensive display in midfield, they held out.
In the 55th minute, the Quins scored their third try when after a fine run from fullback Damien Miller, Rogers threw a wonderful miss-pass which ended with right wing Liam Smith running in from 15 yards out, brushing aside at least two would-be tacklers, to touch down in the corner.
Rogers missed the conversion, but with the score now at 22-3 in the Quins' favour, the result seemed a forgone conclusion.
It was the home side who struck next, however, when after sustained pressure on the Quins' line, flanker Mark Liley forced his way over.
Right wing Jeff Cronin converted from wide out with a fine kick to pull the score back to 22-10.
Bonus points were now the order of the day and it was the Quins who grabbed it with the best try of the match when once again Rogers called the tune when he missed out Scourfied to send centre Paul Jonkers scorching through the gap, and after a minor juggling act, he ran in from 30 yards to touchdown wide out.
Rogers was unlucky with the conversion hitting the crossbar, but with a try bonus point in the bag, the job was done.
It was the home side who had the last say, though, when scrum-half Simon Jones scored his side's second try, with Cronin narrowly missing the conversion.
This fine win for the Quins will put them in good heart for the next game at Gowerton tomorrow (Saturday), before they entertain Penygroes on December 29 and then the local derby against Pembroke on January 5.
