Whitland 30 pts.
Ebbw Vale 29
The biggest upset of the season so far saw Whitland, who had failed to win any of their first seven games in the Swalec Championship, beat Ebbw Vale who had a 100 per cent winning record and had not lost an away league match since October 11, 2011.
In truth, and not withstanding that there was only a point in it, it was a fair result and a victory that Whitland thoroughly deserved for their determination and commintment throughout.
Flanker Ronnie Kynes got Ebbw off to a great start, capitalising on a superb forward drive to make it 5-0 after just two minutes. Two penalties from outside-half Nico Setaro gave Whitland the lead and a try by number eight Llyr Griffiths, after pressure from the home pack, stretched the lead to 11-5.
Kynes scored a second try for Ebbw, which number 10 Dan Haymond converted, after Andrew Jenkins, Whitland's scrum half and skipper was sent to the sin bin for repeated offences.
While he was away, Nico Setaro added a third penalty, then centre Polu Uhi finished off a simple Ebbw move and Haymond converted to make it 19-14 to Ebbw at the interval.
Nico Setaro was on target yet again early in the second half, making it 19-17, before flanker Cameron Reagan went over under the posts and again outside-half Haymond converted, giving Ebbw the lead 26-17 with a bonus point.
Ebbw skipper Mathew Williams was yellow carded and Whitland capitalised as Nico Setaro landed a penalty and then converted a well-worked try by number eight Callum Tree to take his side into a 27-26 lead.
Haymond regained the lead with a penalty, but Nico Setaro had the final word, slotting a sweet penalty to seal the win, 30-29.
It wasn't quite over as referee Mr. Davies red-carded Whitland lock Kieran White for a spur tackle, uncharacteristic of a game that was ferocious but clean, but Whitland hung on for their first victory of the season.
