All of a sudden, and because the First Ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland got together in Cardiff on 14 September and signed a memorandum of understanding declaring a commitment to independence, it seems as if there is a sudden belief that we are somehow embarking on a voyage of sovereignty.
Get real.
That sudden belief is nothing more than a rush of blood to the head.
Whatever Rhun ap Iorwerth, John Swinney and Michelle O’Neill might believe that the course of their three nations is based outside the union of the United Kingdom, it’s a long, long way off.
For starters, the Senedd on Cardiff Bay – as large and shiny as the new chamber might be – doesn’t even have the powers to declare March 1 a national holiday in Wales.
The three Celtic amigos can sign whatever papers they want. The photo op looks good. The paper itself is worthless. Just as worthless, it turns out, as Plaid Cymru’s pre-election promises to fix our health care system.
And how has that worked out so far? Patients being asked to pay for transport. Hospital beds lost. Surgeries closing. Not enough specialised doctors to perform operations of keep patients knocked out if they can actually get a date for surgery.
Maybe Michelle, John and Rhun have, between them, suddenly found a new source of unlimited funding that will allow their separate nations to go their separate ways. But for those of us who live in mid and west Wales, money from the Welsh Government seems to be in very short supply indeed.
Potholes anyone?
Someone should remind our First Minister he leads a minority Government and 68 per cent of Welsh voters do not support independence now. Keep failing us on health care, transport, policing, schools - and who knows where that figure will end up the next time a Senedd election rolls around.
Sure, there’s a case for Westminster to hand over more powers to Cardiff Bay. But with power comes responsibilities. And so far, when it comes to our health service, Plaid hasn’t been responsible. Or responsive.
Sort out the mess we’re in first, please.
