A PROPOSAL on divestment from Israel-related investments is due for discussion by Pembrokeshire County Council.

UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) has written to the Council demanding that no motion on BDS (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions) be even discussed.

UKLFI was set up in 2016 to use its members’ legal skills to defend the state of Israel. It works mainly by writing letters telling institutions that they are acting illegally by permitting some display of support for Palestinians. Recipients of such letters have included art galleries, a hospital, a cinema, a museum, a church, numerous charities, student unions, local councils, a football club, a department store, the Society of Authors, the British Medical Association, Apple and FIFA.

UKLFI has become increasingly active over the past two years, giving rise to formal complaints against the organisation. In August 2025 it was reported that the UK Charity Commission had opened an investigation of UKLFI following a complaint by CAGE International that UKLFI’s activities had undermined its charitable purposes as set out in UK law. In the same month the Public Interest Law Centre was one of two bodies that filed a complaint with the Solicitors Regulation Authority against UKLFI for violation of the legal profession’s code of practice including the use of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs).

Jewish Voice for Liberation is a Jewish-led organisation that advocates for Palestinian Rights. We support Boycott Divestment and Sanctions targeted on Israel. Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and other Welsh Councils have already committed to divestment. We urge Pembrokeshire County Council to join them and stand firm against UKLFI’s threats.
