If my little cottage was a Royal Residence, the response could not have been quicker. The fire engine, with lights flashing, brought a team of uniformed men to my door.

Fortunately, Rachel, a former Friday Fun* reader, had been visiting me whilst on holiday here from Cardiff, and had noticed the red flashing light warning of carbon monoxide.

Immediately she contacted the appropriate authority, who said to open all doors and vacate the cottage.

It was late afternoon on a dismal day but the next- door neighbour invited me in for a cup of tea whilst the fire crew took over my cottage to make it safe until the gas fire was serviced.

In these uncertain times at the moment, it is reassuring to receive such prompt and professional service when we are at our most vulnerable.
