PEMBROKE, Malta, is putting together a programme to commemorate 25 years of Pembroke as a town.

The Mayor of Pembroke, Malta, Joe Zammit is hoping to secure European Funding to hold a 'Youth for Action' event and has invited a group of 10 young people, aged 15 to 18, plus two leaders, from each of their twinned, partnership, friendship agreement towns Pembroke/Pembroke Dock, Bradford Upon Avon, Roccalumera, Sicily, Cetinje, Montenegro, and Bergen, Germany.

The Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Joint Twinning and Tourism Committee are therefore looking for about 10 people aged 15-18 who are associated with youth groups in the two towns, e.g. Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Training Corps., Scouts, Guides, Pembroke Secondary School, religious groups, sports clubs etc., who would be prepared to participate in this visit to Malta from June 29 to July 5 this year.

The intention is that the Pembroke/Pembroke Dock group should bring with them items associated with their town, locality, country and be prepared to possibly prepare and cook a typical Welsh meal which would be presented to a selection of people from Pembroke, Malta, on 'Pembroke Day,' which is July 5.

The group would also be asked to promote their individual culture via a musical item, poetry reading, presentation of the town's history etc.

Accommodation and meals in Malta will be met by Kunsil Lokali Pembroke in Malta. However, the Joint Twinning and Tourism Committee are prepared to assist financially with the cost of the group's travel to Malta.

Twinning events are good news since they encourage people to make new friends and lasting friendships, an opportunity to travel to new places, to experience new cultures and language and to have fun.

The group believes this to be an excellent opportunity for young people from the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Town Council areas to meet other young people from foreign countries. It will also give those taking part a chance to visit Malta and discover what the island and its people has to offer, as well as meeting other European young people who are associated with the twinned town of Pembroke, Malta.

If you would like to become involved in this venture or require any further information, contact Hugh Colley, town clerk, Pembroke, on 01646 683092 or Ian Jones, town clerk, Pembroke Dock, on 01646 684410, who will provide any further information you require.

The Joint Twinning and Tourism Committee will be meeting again on March 26 when, if there is enough interest, the group to represent the two towns will be selected. Expressions of interest should be received by February 27.
