Ironman Wales returns to Tenby and surrounding areas across Pembrokeshire this Sunday and there will be full and partial road closures around the south of the County.

On Sunday, September 21, thousands of athletes will descend on Tenby and Pembrokeshire to compete in the triathlon, with the event starting as always from the iconic North Beach with a two-loop 2.4-mile (3.8 km) swim course setting off at 7.25am.

This will be followed by a two-loop 112-mile (180.2 km) bike course taking athletes through the scenic countryside of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park past the numerous castles and landmarks; before the four-loop 26.2-mile (42.2 km) marathon course, ends at the Esplanade, with the finishing line overlooking South Beach.

There will also be restrictions in Tenby town centre on Saturday when Ironkids from across the county take part in their own competition.

A park and ride shuttle bus will be running on Saturday and Sunday from Carew Airfield to Tenby.

The A40 and A477 will remain open and are unaffected to facilitate access east-west throughout the event.

Emergency services will maintain full access at all times.

A temporary flight restriction zone, specifically affecting drones, will be imposed above Tenby as part of the policing operation during Ironman 2025.

A temporary airspace restriction will be in place between 3am and 11pm for the event on Sunday, September 21 2025, meaning it will be an offence for any unmanned aircraft to fly below 2,000 ft above sea level in the designated area, without the explicit permission of Dyfed-Powys Police.

Drone users flying inside the Restricted Airspace that have not been granted permission will be committing an offence and could be prosecuted as well as having their equipment seized and confiscated.

The airspace restrictions will have an impact on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), which refers to drones and their users. Full details of the restrictions are available on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website.

Drone pilots are also encouraged to check other sources of information such as NOTAM Info and Drone Safety Map, before flying.

Anyone who wishes to seek consideration for the safe and appropriate flight of a drone in these areas must obtain permission from Dyfed-Powys Police by sending an email to: [email protected]

Full details of the restrictions are available on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website: Drones | UK Civil Aviation Authority

The event date has already been set for next year, taking place on September 13.

The organisers shared: “As we look ahead to facing the dragon this year, we already can't wait to return in 2026! Ironman Wales will be back on Sunday 13th September next year.

“If you're in Tenby for race week this year, you can enter exclusively in Expo from Friday to Monday on race weekend only, which will guarantee you a spot at the lowest entry price if you enter right away.

“General registration will then open online on Thursday 25th September.”
