On August 23, Llandysilio hosted its sixth annual five-a-side football tournament. With the rain pouring down for most of the day, it didn't deter over 120 youngsters taking part within the various age groups.
There was stiff competition in each age group, with the tournament being run on a round robin basis and the top two from each group going through to the final.
After some close games, with an excellent standard of football played, the under 9s' final was between Camrose and Tenby. The final was a close fought affair, but at the final whistle, Camrose won, with Matthew Delaney named as player of the tournament.
The under 13s was a close affair, but after the round of games which included teams from Tenby, Kilgetty and Clarby Road, it was Fishguard and Cardigan who made it through to the final.
The final was a close fought affair and at the end of fulltime the scores remained 1-1. The game went in to extra-time and with no further goals, the dreaded penalty kicks resulted, with Cardigan the victors after slotting in every penalty. The player of the tournament was John Curren from Cardigan.
The under 15s competition was played in a great spirit and was again a close affair, with Clarby Road and local team Hardchester United playing in the final.
The rain swept down, but didn't deter the players giving their all. After the end of full and extra-time, the score remained 1-1 and once again it was a penalty shoot-out. Clarby Road were the winning side and goalkeeper Matthew Davies was named as player of the tournament.
During the day, the Playing Fields Association made a presentation to two villagers who have excelled in the field of football recently.
A cheque was presented to Angharad James, who has already won international honours playing football for Wales, and to Rhys Eynon, who plays football for the Cleddau Warriors and was recently named FAW Player of the Year.
The village of Llandysilio is very proud of these youngsters and wishes them well for the future.
Llandysilio Playing Fields would like to thank Milford Haven Port Authority for sponsoring the trophies and medals.
Also, a big thank you to all players and parents for turning up in the rain to participate in the day and to the referees - Paul Jenkins, Sion Jenkins, Huw George, Paul Thomas and Clive James.
