The countdown is on to a unique theatre performance written solely by young people in Pembrokeshire.

The 'Young Writers' Squad' have been writing and editing scripts for the stage since the beginning of the year.

Now their work is to be brought to life, in a performance at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven on Tuesday, July 8, between 5 and 6 pm. The performance has been developed by Torch Youth Theatre director Dave Ainsworth, using the scripts provided by the squad.

Actors from the Torch Youth Theatre, including some of the writers from the original squad, will be performing the pieces. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome to go along.

Aged 12 and over, the writers are pupils at Greenhill School, Pembroke School, Sir Thomas Picton School and Tasker Milward School. They have been meeting regularly at Haverfordwest Library, working with professional writer Dan Anthony, on the theme of 'In The Neighbourhood'. The Young Writers' Squad was established by Pembrokeshire County Council's library service with the aim of encouraging young people to develop their interest in all types of writing, be it poetry, prose or lyrics.

It has been running for two years at Haverfordwest Library and is supported by Academi. "Once again this year the young people of Pembrokeshire have produced some excellent ideas that they have developed into quality material for performing," said Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services, sports, leisure and tourism. Earlier this year, the squad took part in poetry and music workshops on Arriva trains with writer Dylan Adams, to promote journeys around Pembrokeshire by rail.

The material has been recorded and is now available on the Arriva Trains Wales website. Last summer, the squad also developed scripts for a soap opera 'Here and Now', which was broadcast on the internet.
