There was a lovely atmosphere at St. Johns Church Easter Sunday concert last week, when Tenby Male Choir performed their regular Easter event, on behalf of the church. It has been a long-established event, with one chorister remarking at the end of the concert, that he has now sung 35 Easter Sunday concerts there! Despite a number of men having to absent themselves through sickness or holiday or family commitments, the choir gave a most enjoyable concert, with a good variety of pieces sung. Dressed in their dinner suits, and wearing their daffodils, they presented a very professional looking spectacle, for the 100-plus audience, most of whom were visitors to Tenby. There were some members of the audience who were visitors from Germany and Australia. It was good to see the regular Tenby Male Choir fan-club in attendance, too! The chairman of the choir acted as compere for the evening, as David was away on holiday, and Terry got the audience chuckling on a number of occasions with his lugubrious references to CDs being on sale. Mrs. Mollie Neate, on behalf of St. Johns, welcomed the choir and also introduced the guest artists for the evening. These were a delightful group of very talented young women, the Pembrokeshire Trio. A newly-formed group, trained by Mrs. Lisa Richards, they have recently taken part in the regional auditions of the British 'Music for Youth' competition and are very hopeful of a place in the National Festival for Youth in Birmingham later this year. Pianist for the trio, is 14-year-old Simone Terry, who attends Sir Thomas Picton School. A very accomplished musician, Simone has grade 8 in piano and is working towards grade 8 in violin as well as her regular GCSEs. Violinist Madi Phillips also attends Sir Thomas Picton School where she is studying for A levels. She leads the school orchestra and string orchestra and sings in several choirs. At 17, Madi also is an excellent musician who clearly enjoys playing and has played for a number of charities in their fund-raising concerts. The third member of the group is Lara Thomas, just 18, who attends Ysgol y Preseli. Lara has performed solo with Tenby Male Choir in the past, but it was in a new format that she played on Sunday evening with Simone and Madi. Lara, a member of the County, Chamber and Six Counties Orchestras, has been offered a place at Oxford University to read, not music, but biological sciences, so she will be leaving Pembrokeshire in the not too distant future. The group played two very beautiful pieces, one in each choir break, the 'Schindler's List' theme tune and the 1st movement of Vivaldi's double violin concerto 'L'Estro Armonico'. Both were much enjoyed by the audience and choir members. Mrs. Mollie Neate gave the vote of thanks to the Pembrokeshire Trio, to Jill, choir accompanist, Ian, choir MD, and the choristers themselves, for such a wonderful feast of music on such a special day for the church. The church is most grateful to the choir for the many fund-raising concerts they have given them over the years. It was clear that the audience had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as they remarked upon their leaving, and it was evident from the number of CDs sold.
