A young Pembrokeshire golfer proved a big hit at the final of the 2006 Junior Wales Open, presented by Coca Cola, at the Celtic Manor's Wentwood Hills Course.

The event, which saw 50 competitors battling it out in blazing sunshine, was the culmination of a national tournament that gives opportunities to budding young golfers to play during The Celtic Manor Wales Open.

A series of four regional qualification events saw 300 of the best up-and-coming players from across the country fight it out for the limited places available at this year's final.

Finalists qualified in four separate age group divisions and in both male and female categories. Georgia Thomas, of Tenby Golf Club, flew the flag for Pembrokeshire, winning the Under 12s, beating off stiff competition.

Speaking after her win, Georgia said: "It was close match between all of us on the day. The practice round beforehand really helped me to plan my round and shot positioning.

"I was in third place on the 13th hole, and from then on I hit the ball really well. I stepped up a gear and started getting some good pars, which put me into the lead. I've been practising a lot this year and it's really helped my chipping and bunker play, and to win here today is the just reward to the effort I've put in."

Another young Tenby golfer, David Webb, also qualified for the final stages of the tournament and enjoyed his weekend rubbing shoulders with the stars at Celtic Manor.

The winners were presented with their trophies by Sir Terry Matthews, chairman, of the Celtic Manor Resort, Derek Lee, of Coca Cola, and Welsh Ryder Cup hero, Philip Price during The Celtic Manor Wales Open players barbeque.
