A 12-year-old swimmer from Pembroke has qualified for the British National Age Group Championships in the 200m freestyle.

Carys Thomas, a pupil at Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych, qualified with a time of 2:14.39 at the recent West Wales Championships at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre.

She follows fellow swimmer Kelsey Williams from Haverfordwest, who qualified for the championships last November,

A member of the Pembroke and District Swimming Club, Carys was swimming by the age of four, taught by Jolene Wheeler at Milford Haven Leisure Centre. She also received school swimming lessons from Trina Bowen (Pembroke School swimming co-ordinator) at Pembroke Leisure Centre.

Carys now trains with the Pembrokeshire Performance Squad coached by Paul Dowey, Pembrokeshire Leisure's swimming development coach.

"Her own dedication and commitment to the training programme has produced results," said Paul.

The British National Age Group Championships will take place in Sheffield at the end of July.
