Sixteen-year-old Luke Guymer re-wrote the history books in the 80th anniversary year of Tenby Bowling Club at the weekend when he became the youngest ever club champion. Dispelling any thoughts that bowls is an old man's game, the Pembrokeshire College student clinched the T. P. Hughes Challenge Cup with a dramatic 21-19 victory over clubmate Peter Day and in doing so denied Peter his own unique achievement - a clean sweep of singles titles at the Sutton Street club. In a final that gripped spectators from beginning to end, Luke looked to have the game in the bag when he was 17-8 up on his opponent. Peter, however, had other ideas. He chipped his way back into the game and levelled it up at 17-all. They peeled again at 19-apiece, before Luke pulled off a sensational match-winning shot. With Peter holding two shots and the title within his grasp, Luke, with his last bowl, drove out both to leave him with three of his own to seal the silverware. Later that afternoon, Peter went onto partner Andrew Muskett in the Berry and Rogers four-wood pairs, while on Sunday morning he gained revenge for his defeat on Saturday by beating Luke to take the Maurice Ormond two-wood singles, and as if that was not enough, he also defeated Tenby captain Pat Currie 21-18 in the Gerald Fox singles competition. In the ladies section, former Welsh junior international Ceris Hewlings was foiled in her own bid to become the first lady bowler to lift all four singles cups in the same season when she was beaten 21-20 by club stalwart Mair Marquiss in an epic-tussle for the Catherine Newton Rose Bowl. Lasting two-and-threequarter hours, this game turned into a marathon 31-end contest and produced yet another nail-biting finish. In what turned out to be a ding-dong battle, Ceris looking to be heading for victory when she levelled it at 20-20 and was holding shot with just one bowl remaining - but how important that one was. Drawing on all her experience, Mair showed great skill and composure as she calmly stepped up to the mat and produced an immaculate wood to nail the jack... and the trophy! What a tremendous match; it was a pity someone had to lose after the outstanding bowling both had shown. Consolation for Ceris, however, soon came when she was crowned club champion after defeating Alison Redman 21-6 to lift the coveted F. B. Mason Rose Bowl. And there was more success when she chalked up further singles victories in the Bill and Gladys Gray Cup and W. J. Coombe Cup, as well as teaming up with delighted Burney Russell to win the New Pavilion four-wood pairs cup for the third time. Also enjoying a memorable weekend was Pauline Barnikel, who appeared in three finals and was successful in them all, while in the junior section, Joseph Richards repeated his achievement of last year by picking up both the Chris Crockford Cup and the Dr. E. Williams Cup after beating Liam McDaid in both finals. Both Joe and Liam showed great skill and sportsmanship on the green and were a credit to themselves and the club. And there was victory, too, for the club officials! Chairman Jon Webb partnered his brother-in-law and club secretary, Dai Spencer, to win the Evans and Johns two-wood pairs. Shortly after play ended on what was a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon, a presentation and buffet took place, when the trophies were presented by club captain, Mike Crockford. Club chairman Jon Webb thanked all the players and officials who had helped make the weekend so successful, including umpires Doug Silcox, Alan Redman and Bert Barnikel, Dai Spencer and Ted Brutnell for organising the playing schedules, Alan and Alison Redman and Marnie Owens for preparing the buffet and Graham for running the bar.
