Neyland Youth 17 pts. Narberth Youth 43

Narberth Youth continued their good form for the season with an away win against a battling Neyland side on Saturday. The visitors romped into a quick lead when, from the kick-off, they showed good hands and pace to open up the defence for fullback Gethin Salter to race through under the posts. Playing with the slope in their favour, Narberth maintained the pressure and, within 10 minutes, a period of good inter-passing involving forwards and backs resulted in winger Kevin Symmonds outpacing the defence to touch down in the corner. Narberth then relaxed allowing Neyland back into the game and conceded 10 points from a converted try and a penalty before striking back with a well- taken try by number eight Rion Whatmore from a clever kick into space by fly-half Sam Macnaghton. Despite playing some untidy rugby at this stage, Narberth managed to grab another seven points just before the interval when inside centre Richard Sharpe-Williams used his power and pace to cut through the opposition defence and race home. A stern talking to at half-time from coach John Chinn produced a better second half performance, with the young Otters laying siege to the Neyland line, only to be kept out by determined tackling. The defence finally cracked when Rion Whatmore, closely supporting a break by the centres, took an off-load to cross for his second try. Although most of the rugby was now being played in the Neyland half, the home side grabbed another seven points when a dropped Narberth pass was hacked through by the impressive number 10, who won the race for the touchdown. Another long period of Narberth pressure resulted in 10 more points being bagged, with tries from flying winger Paul Beddis and recent recruit Ben Douglas, who impressed with his all-round play. Four of Narberth's tries were converted by fly-half Sam Macnaghton. The match was again well refereed by M. Brinckle. Tomorrow (Saturday), the young Otters have a tough home fixture against Haverfordwest, with a 2.30 kick-off. Narberth team: Gareth Jones, Paul Brown, Gareth Beynon, Aled John, Ben Jenkins, Johnny Manns, Rion Whatmore, Dan Adams, Tom Parsells, Sam Macnaghton, Richard Sharpe-Williams, Dan Davies, Paul Beddis, Kevin Symmonds, Ben Douglas and Gethin Salter.
