Winner of the Young Musician of Dyfed Competition 2010 is Catrin Price, 16, of Bronwydd Arms, Carmarthenshire.
Catrin is an extremely accomplished flautist who delighted an audience at Ysgol Preseli on Saturday evening with a varied programme featuring Bach, Enesco and Welsh composer Mervyn Burtch. Catrin wins cash prizes as well as an opportunity to play at St. David's Cathedral Festival in May when she will have a piece specially composed for her by Aled Start, Young Composer of Dyfed.
Second prize went to Sioned Llywelyn, 17, clarinettist, of Llanilar, Ceredigion, and third went to Charlie Kind, a 15-year-old cellist from Meidrim.
All five finalists recieved praise from the chairman of adjudicators, John Stein, former leader of the Welsh National Opera orchestra. John and his fellow adjudicators, harpist Claire Jones and bassoonist Christopher Vale found time after a very long day to give advice and encouragement.
The other two finalists were Talis Spence, aged 12, of Saundersfoot, who played piano and 14-year-old Thomas Mathias, of Llanbadarn Fawr, Ceredigion.
The evening was ably hosted by Emyr Wynne Jones, of Carmarthenshire Education Service, who thanked all concerned in making such a contribution to the opportunity afforded to young people locally.
The competition is run entirely by volunteers and the charity welcomes new volunteers and donations which help to pay for venue, professional fees and piano hire.
