On a truly magnificent late summer’s day, with the temperature reaching a balmy 25 degrees, the former Carew airfield again proved to be the ideal site for the Martletwy and District Young Farmers Clubs’ increasingly popular annual agricultural show.

Treasurer and assistant secretary Rachel Mathias remarked that as everyone was preparing for the show on the previous day, the temperature might well have been even higher!

“Since becoming well-established on the present site, the event has the advantage of being seen by passing traffic and this undoubtedly draws in many holidaymakers to the area who fully appreciate a family day out and the attractions we have to offer,” said Rachel.

As well as all the usual favourites, including the Quack Pack and a parade of the South Pembrokeshire Hounds, this year’s event included sheepdog trials, Edupet and the introduction of classes for Ryeland sheep.

Supreme from the horse and pony classes was Bert Lavis’s five year old chestnut Show Hunter Pony, Blue Rock Amethyst, splendidly ridden by Seren James.

Possibly for the first time ever, there were no dairy cattle on show, but taking best from the beef entries again was the home-bred Limousin second calver, Deri Hot Chocolate, shown by Terry and Dawn Griffiths.

An excellent number of Hereford cattle forward were led by another home bred animal - Anthony John’s 10-month-old bull Lax Tornado.

The Martletwy Show organisers proudly put on a team of five award in the cattle ring which was this time won by the commercials, but with very strong challenges from the Limousin, Hereford and Welsh Black breeders.

Best in show from the keenly contested companion dog classes went to Wolfscastle Barley Blue, a four-year-old Whippet shown by Wendy Familia with a similar entry - a 10-month-old from Martin Bristow - taking the puppy award.

Officials, president: Mr. Hugh Harrison Allen, chairman: Ieuan Jenkins, vice- chairman: Dave Shanklin, secretaries: Jane Meyrick, Lesley Rotchford, Sharon Knox and Libby Nicholas, treasurer: Rachel Mathias.
