Pembrokeshire County Council is to start the second phase of the Tenby enhancement scheme on Monday. It follows a pilot scheme carried out by the authority earlier this year which involved widening the footpath on the seaward side of High Street and resurfacing it with natural flagstones. The second part of the scheme also involves renewing the footway surfacing with natural flagstones, this time on the opposite side of the street. The work will be carried out from the White Lion Hotel to the Crackwell Street junction area. Many of the buildings have cellars that extend under the highway and the authority's consultants are to ensure that the works have no detrimental effect on these cellars. They are also working with Western Power, who will be laying a new electrical cable under the pavement. The council will be visiting shop owners in High Street before the start of the work to discuss the programming and access to their shops during the construction period. Temporary traffic lights will be used during the work, but the road will not need to be closed and the authority will strive to keep inconvenience to a minimum. The scheme is designed to create a quality, relaxing environment which will improve accessibility and safety. Subject to obtaining sufficient funding, the authority intends to complete the enhancement of High Street next year (2005) with work in Tudor Square programmed to start in 2006 following further consultation with the relevant organisations. The scheme is part of the Tenby Tourism Growth Area Action Plan. The six-year programme is being delivered through a representative working partnership. The overall aim of the strategy is to improve the value of tourism to the area and benefit the local economy, community and environment.
