Using small chisels of various sorts, a wood-engraver cuts marks into the surface of a block, traditionally of boxwood. With control, precision, purpose and patience an image is created. The block's surface is then inked and used for relief printing. In most drawing, the artist makes dark marks, indicating shadow. Wood engravers however draw with light, in lines, dots and directional strokes. A unique opportunity to see a wood engraver at work occurs on next Friday, October 8, at Art Matters, Tenby. Hilary Paynter, chairperson of the Society of Wood Engravers, will be demonstrating this centuries old craft, between 11 am and 4 pm, in the gallery in which her exhibition is currently showing. Art Matters is in South Parade, next to the fire station. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free. Further details are available by telephoning the gallery on (01834) 843375.
