Would it rain? That was the question hovering on everyone's lips as the time drew near for the pig roast event at Cresswell Quay.

As in other years, the members of Carew and Cresswell Quay local committee for Cancer Research had prepared for this annual fund-raising evening knowing that if the conditions were right, ie. good weather and a good gathering of people, it would raise a good deal of money for their cause.

The last two years had seen inclement weather with disappointing results. You really do need the sun to shine to bring out the crowds.

So, as Friday, July 23, approached, a great sigh of relief was heard, the weather was perfect and Cresswell Quay, looking at its best in the evening sunlight, was packed.

There was a stall selling just about everything and there were bargains to be had. There was a very good selection of flowers and plants which sold really well. The ladies working on the pig roast were ably assisted by Maurice Cole, Andy Pannell and Brian Jaques. Ann very kindly sold raffle tickets to the people in the pub and David Gould also helped out with the raffle.

The raffle was drawn at about 8.15 and the winners were: Fizz who won the first prize of a bottle of whisky; D. Sorsby who won a large planter; Graham Barrett who won a wine hamper, but asked for it to be auctioned. This was duly done, thanks to Brian Murray for running the auction and to Mr. Aubrey Young who bought it for a generous amount of money. Vanessa Phillips won some Tesco vouchers, 'Phil the pram' won a vase, Les Smith won a bottle of wine, Roz and Joe Mooney won some mugs, Joan McCready won a meat voucher and Jack won chocolates. Thanks to all those who donated the raffle prizes.

The area representative paid a visit during the evening and commented on the wonderful turnout. She thanked everyone for their help and support which the committee would like to endorse.

They would like to thank especially Maurice and Janet Cole for allowing the event to take place and for all the work they do. It is much appreciated.

Of course, these events would not be successful without the support of the public, so to all those who came, who helped, who bought and generally supported the pig roast that evening, thank you very much.

The amount raised was £1,708.78 - a wonderful effort. This sum included donations from some very generous people.
