TENBY Museum and Art Gallery is delighted to have recently received a unique volume of work entitled Tenby Sketches - Charles Norris, copied by Emily H. Edwards with notes by Edward L. Laws. The donation was made by Mrs. M. Anne Solesbury, step-granddaughter of Emily H. Edwards. Emily was the second wife of David Hinds, of Cornish Down, who was a prominent farmer at the time and also had a milk round in Tenby. They had no children. Edward Laws was an antiquarian and a prominent resident of Tenby in the 19th century. He was one of the founders of the museum and amongst other things is well-known for writing the historical book Little England beyond Wales. Together with his ward, Emily Hewitt, they wrote The Church Book of St. Mary's. Until her marriage, Emily lived with Edward Laws in Brighton Villa on Narberth Road. She was an accomplished artist and skilfully copied 64 of the Pembrokeshire sketches by Charles Norris, now held in the Cardiff Free Library, to which Laws also added the historical notes. This wonderful leather bound volume was completed in 1903 and has remained in the family ever since. With the generous permission of all concerned, it has now come home to Tenby and will be a welcome addition to the museum's archive and research facilities. Charles Norris came to Tenby in 1805 and drew and painted the town as it was changing from a ruined Tudor town to an elegant Georgian resort. His work is constantly referred to by researchers interested in the buildings and layout of the town. To have faithful copies of his work is an extremely useful addition to the museum's resources. Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is most grateful to the family for donating this gift. It will be displayed in the Wilfred Harrison Gallery from time to time and will otherwise be available to view by appointment. Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is now open every day from 10 am until 5 pm. Last admission is at 4.30pm. Research facilities are available by appointment.
