Two late tries by Aberavon finally put paid to Narberth's hopes in this top of the table clash at the Lewis Lloyd ground on Saturday.

The 38-21 scoreline may have somewhat flattered the visiting Wizards after the Otters pulled back from 15-0 down to 25-21 but there was no denying their power up front, which proved to be the cornerstone of their success.

With mobile number eight Richard Morris spearheading an agile pack, Aberavon had Narberth on the ropes during the first half, forcing them to live off scraps, particularly in the lines out, where they were enable to secure effective platform ball.

The Wizards weaved their magic in the opening stages, and, while the Otters defended resolutely, soon opened up a seemingly comfortable lead with tries from David Hawkins and Matthew Back.

Prolific points scorer James Davies was off target with one of the conversions but slotted over the other to add to an earlier penalty.

Dominating all facets, Aberavon looked to be running away with things, but the Otters stuck to their guns and started to make inroads when the Wizards were reduced to 14 men following the yellow carding of hooker Jason Hyart.

The ever reliable Gareth Bennett opened the Otters account, although not through one of his trademark bulldozings breaks, but with a snap drop goal.

Davies restored the visitors' advantage with another penalty but Narberth responded with a try when wing Daniel Gravelle rounded off after hooker Craig Hawkins split the Wizards' defence.

Narberth lost the services of flanker Matthew Evans for 10 minutes just before the break when he was shown the yellow card, while Hawkins was also forced to leave the field with a shoulder injury to be replaced by Simon Delaney.

Davies added another penalty just before the change around.

Narberth started the second half in fine fettle with stand-off Gareth James reducing the arrears with a penalty, but Davies son restored the advantage with another three pointer.

The Otters brought fresh legs on in the shape of Chris Macdonald, Ackeray Malesala, Mike James and Jason Jennings who helped turn up the pressure on the visitors.

Scrum half Adrian Killa hacked a through ball for half-back partner James to chase from inside the Wizards' 22 and when the stand-off was illegally impeded, the referee immediately signalled a penalty try, which James converted.

James then added a penalty to see the margin reduced to just five points but when the Otters had a penalty decision in their favour reversed, Aberavon took advantage to work their way back into the homesters' territory.

Dafydd Owen bagged a try just on the end of proper time to seal Aberavon's success while flanker gareth Newman grabbed another touchdown, converted by Davies, in time added on to give the Wizards a more flattering scoreline.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Narberth travel up the line to take on Tondu.
