A feast of entertainment took place, at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven when the Pembrokeshire Federation of WIs (PFWI) put on its very popular annual ‘Anything Goes’ concert.
Eight local Women’s Institutes (WIs) participated, including Ludchurch, Nolton Haven, Carew, Llandissilio and Clunderwen and Llawhaden, who were each performing for the very first time - which was no mean feat in front of a packed theatre audience.
The first WI on the stage was Ludchurch with their repertoire of musical melodies, followed by Nolton Haven in their fetching gnome costumes performing ‘Gnome Alone’. Menevia’s amusing ‘St. Davids in the 21st Century’ sketch was followed by a rousing melody of popular old-tyme musical hall songs by Milford Haven WI, which included a lovely performance by the ventriloquist, Pat Farrar, with her able and funny companion Oliver.
After the interval, Carew WI surprised everyone with their energetic ‘w-rapping’ performance celebrating the forthcoming centenary of their institute. Llandissilio and Clunderwen WI’s peformance of ‘Zimmering Grannies’ was much enjoyed by the audience, who obviously liked the amusing antics taking place on the stage.
Llawhaden WI was next on stage with their ‘Sisters Can’t Act’ sketch and aren’t we glad that nuns today don’t behave in that manner? Rolling around the stage and drinking wine from a bottle is not exactly the image that we have of these religious ladies!
The final act saw St. Issell’s WI taking the stage with their sketch of WI ladies visiting a residential home at Christmas and entertaining the two residents (yes there were only two in this particular home!) with a selection of Christmas melodies, which included a delightful solo by Eva Rich.
The concert was ably compered by the Federation treasurer, Daphne Morgan, who, not only introduced each institute and its background, but also kept the audience much amused with her fund of funny stories.
Thanks to the generosity of the ladies present, raffle proceeds of £366 were raised during the evening for Milford Haven School and a cheque was handed to the Mayor of Milford Haven, Mr Colin Sharp, by a PFWI trustee, Mrs. Pat James, who incidentally also happens to be the chair of the school governors.
