Securing a future in rural Wales will have to come from farmers and rural people themselves, looking beyond the farm gate to come up with innovative ideas.

A seminar 'Winning Ways for Rural Women' will be held on December 3 at the Nantyffin Motel, Llandissilio.

SPARC/PLANED representative, Buddig Meredith, said: "This is an opportunity to help rural women discuss and plan their future by taking part in workshops. We will be looking at getting a job off the farm, ideas on using skills people already have to create a business and looking at diversification ideas. In addition, there will be a workshop to assist you in developing an arts and craft business."

Julie Thomas, a workshop leader, runs a hill farm in the Rhondda Valley and, having been disillusioned with the decline in sheep prices, decided to look at other options. As a result, she and her husband have diversified successfully into numerous enterprises.

Julie stated: "I think that diversifying will not work for everyone, but believe that the most important aspect of any project is innovation."

In addition to Julie, Olwen Moss from Cwysi/Farming Connect and Beverly Pold from Chwarae Teg will be running workshops.

There will be exhibition stands to meet a range of suppliers of information and guidance, and of course a chance to meet other women and friends to exchange views in an informal setting. The farming unions, Cwysi, PTP Quality Training, Chwarae Teg and Employment Service are supporting the day.

Guest speaker is Shan Ashton from Bangor University, who has 14 years experience of working with women from rural areas and was instrumental in setting up Cynnyrch Eryri Cyf (a farmers owned co-operative).

The day is part funded under the European Union Leader II programme.

A few places are still available, but booking is essential as the day includes a three-course lunch using local produce, including Preseli lamb, at £5 per person only.
