The winning entry in a competition to promote fire safety among primary schoolchildren in Pembrokeshire may be used in an awareness campaign ahead of November 5 next year. More than 1,000 posters and leaflets designed by school children in 12 primary schools in the Pembroke family of schools were submitted in the competition run by the Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade. Both the first and second prizes were won by Year Six pupils at Stackpole VC School. Lucy James's winning entry earned her a laptop, while her classmate, Alex Hay, won a Nintendo games console after coming a close second. Runner-up prizes of iPods were awarded to Natasha Springer, of Monkton School, and Jahade Davies, of Pennar School. The competition was sponsored by Chevron, Tesco and the Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade. Stephen Parkes, crew manager at Pembroke Dock Fire Station, said the competition had achieved its aim of getting the fire safety message across to children. "We always visit the schools to discuss fire safety, but this competition made children think that little bit more because they had to research the information that went into producing these entries,' said Mr. Parkes. "It seems to be working because I have worked at Pembroke Dock fire station for five years and during that time we haven't had to deal with any accidents involving fireworks and fire on November 5.'
