Wings over Pembrokeshire is a charity set up just over a year ago. It provides people with learning difficulties from all over the county with the opportunity to play music with local musicians who volunteer their help. "Among the most popular activities are music workshops," said a spokesperson. "Groups of about 12 per session come along and play various percussion instruments, keyboard or any other instrument they may like to bring of their own and join in with the band. Some come and sing, playing and creating many types of music. It is not a teacher-student situation, it's one big jam session. The enthusiasm of everybody involved creates an electric atmosphere. The whole idea is for mainstream to integrate with special needs and special needs to integrate into the mainstream. "Everybody learns from each other and gains a greater understanding socially and musically. People with moderate and severe learning difficulties gain confidence in a world that often leaves them behind, friendships are made and some of the more shy amongst them come out of their shell. People from the mainstream discover the companionship and uninhibited enthusiasm that always seems to be around when people with special needs conker their disabilities; it's a lesson to be learned by us all." To enable this to continue and to expand to more people in Pembrokeshire, a fund-raising gig has been arranged on Saturday, September 29, 8 pm to 12 midnight, at Wilton House, Haverfordwest. The Last Chancers, Funkaphize, Renthouse Groove and other guests will be performing. This will be a great night out and a chilly or vegetarian buffet is included in the ticket price of £10. Tickets are available from Dales in Tenby or 'phone Steve Young on 01834 844324 for more information.
