Whitland gained their first away victory in Division One West after a disciplined performance, with man-of-the-match Emyr Williams scoring all their points.

The Borderers led at half-time after Williams had kicked two out of three penalty attempts. Their set-piece play, especially the lineout, with Carwyn Davies and Raff Williams dominating, brought Whitland close to Waunarlwydd's try line on a few occasions, but the home defence held firm. In the second half, Whitland's dominance continued, and, having missed a penalty in the eighth minute after a lineout infringement Emyr Williams increased their lead, after the home side's backs strayed offside.

Midway through the half, the home side's discipline again let them down, and after giving away a penalty, their prop Adam Lee got involved with Whitland hooker Aled Harris. Match referee Lyn Davies, who refereed the game fairly and consistently, had no alternative but to yellow card the players. From the resulting penalty, Emyr Williams slotted the three points to take Whitland into a useful 12- point lead.

With eight minutes remaining and somewhat against the run of play, Waunarlwydd scored their only points of the game, when number eight Paul Morris picked up from the base of a scrum six metres out and crashed over for a try. Fullback Johnny Lewis added the conversion points. Whitland sealed a deserved victory three minutes from time. When the home side were again penalised, Emyr Williams kicked deep into their 22, where the subsequent lineout was won comfortably by Raff Williams. Quick ball from replacement scrum-half Gareth Davies then saw fly-half Williams throw a dummy and ghost in under the posts to complete a fine performance, adding the conversion to take his tally to 19 points.

The Borderers thoroughly deserved their victory and many would say they should have scored a lot more points, but their first victory on the road was welcomed by the visiting supporters. Whitland's next match is home to local rivals Narberth tomorrow (Saturday).

Whitland WANDERERS Whitland Wanderers Poly Pipe Civils League match had to be cancelled due to the fact that Bonymaen failed to raise a side to travel to Whitland. Mumbles Youth 11 pts. Whitland Youth 13 Whitland travelled to play Mumbles in the first round of the Welsh Youth Cup on Sunday and after a game played between two strong sides, deservedly came out on top by the narrowest of margins.

Both sides were well matched up front, and showed plenty of finesse behind. Whitland opened the scoring after eight minutes when outside-half Jonathan Thomas slotted over a penalty.

This was countered by Mumbles outside-half Adam Nicklin, after 20 minutes. Whitland regained the lead on the half-hour. After good work by the pack, quick ball saw skipper and centre Alex Pickersgill break through and give the ball to flying winger James Criddle, who was brought down just short.

Quick recycling by the back row enabled number 10 Jonathan Thomas, with great vision, to put in the cross-kick for second row Carl Smith to gather and go over for the try.

Thomas added the conversion points to leave the half-time score 10-3 in favour of the young Borderers. Early in the second half, Thomas increased the lead with another well-taken penalty. Midway through, Mumbles crossed for their only try of the game, when left winger Jack Spinner touched down. The try went unconverted.

This gave the home side momentum and with some eight minutes remaining they were awarded a penalty which outside-half Adam Nicklin kicked, to bring them within two points.

Playing with the slope, Mumbles piled on the pressure, but Whitland's defence held firm and with the clock ticking down seemed to have done enough.

But the drama had not ended. When the referee awarded a late penalty, all seemed to be lost for Whitland, but the Mumbles number 10 sliced his kick wide and the final whistle was eventually blown, with the young Borderers marching on into the second round.
